Today’s word: “Dissociation”
Dissociation is your bodies process of disconnecting from one’s thoughts, feelings, memories or sense of identity.
When people are dissociating they literally disconnect from their surroundings, which can stop the trauma memories and lower fear, anxiety and shame.
When dissociation occurs it means your body is overloaded and has sensed something in your current experience that reminds you or connects you with your trauma.
Certain sights, sounds, smells, touches, and even tastes can set off, or “trigger” us to become overwhelmed.
Its very important to remember that everyone's experience of dissociation is different and not to be judged.
Through becoming more intimate with myself I’ve been able to identify many of the ways dissociation can occur for me in my life and have created effective regulation rituals to help me stay connected and present with my loved ones.
One of these rituals is putting on my “invisibility cloak”. In my cloak I feel protected, in my cloak I feel hidden but still able to observe my surroundings, in my cloak it feels “safe” and that’s the most important thing.
So the next time you feel triggered or overwhelmed pause and tune into your body notice what your feeling. I guarantee your body is speaking to you loud and clear… all you have to do is listen…
What works for me doesn’t always work for everyone.
