GDS Horn of Africa Program (HOAP)

GDS Horn of Africa Program (HOAP) HOAP is a GDS service-learning program that takes students and faculty members to Ethiopia and Kenya each summer.

On this trip, GDSers work primarily with 3 organizations.
• Project Mercy, located in the Ethiopian countryside, is a comprehensive rural development program with an exemplary school, a hospital, craft apprentice shops, and an operating dairy farm.
• Hope for Children, located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, provides housing, education, and care for orphans, particularly those who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS.
• Ray of Hope, located in Kenya, runs a school and a medical center in the heart of Nairobi’s slums.

DONATE any used laptops, computer games, programs, or documentaries to the Ray of Hope Foundation!
Proceeds will go to elementary schools in slum and rural communities of Kenya, each of which currently have only one laptop and virtually no educational computer programs. There are COLLECTION BINS in the lower, middle, and high school, or we can pick up any donations!
Visit www.rayofhope4all.org for more information on the foundation and its specific projects.

Our programs promote long-term, sustainable growth in African communities. It’s what makes us different.

REMEMBER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE $1 DRIVE THIS WEEK! COLLECTION BOX AT THE FRONT DESK AND IN THE INTERNET CAFE!

Students of the Ray of Hope school in Kawangware, playing at the park where they now have P.E. class once a month. $20 dollars allows them to have P.E. outside at this park, rather than the small classroom they normally use.

Hey guys! Tomorrow HOAP is starting our $1 Drive!!! The goal of the drive is for every student and faculty member in the school to donate one dollar to the Horn of Africa Program!! The money will go to the kids at the Ray of Hope school in Nairobi, Kenya. The school is situated in the second largest slum in all of Africa. Specifically, the money will make it so that the kids at Ray of Hope can have P.E. outside on a field rather than inside in a small room (which is what they have currently). It costs $20 for a session at the field. Every dollar makes a difference. Please donate $1 at some point this week!!! There will be collection boxes at the front desk and in the internet cafe!! If you would like to give more than $1, that would be great!

Thanks!!
