As we commemorate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, A4 and BCDC are teaming up (no pun intended) for a private Mahjong lesson at Lucky Danger DC, an American Chinese restaurant on the edge of Chinatown (May 30 @ 6 to 8 PM)! We can't wait to learn this popular and historic Chinese tabletop tile game that's become quite the rage lately!

Our lesson will be in Lucky Danger's Mahjong Room, which was directly inspired by the parlor in the movie "Rush Hour," from 6 - 8 PM. Whether you heard about Mahjong growing up from your Chinese or Jewish grandmother (it is also Jewish American Heritage Month!), first heard of it thanks to "Crazy Rich Asians or "Rush Hour," or just want to have fun learning an essential bit of Chinese and Chinese-American culture, this is your chance to dive in alongside fellow Brunonians!

Space is limited to the first 15 registrants to ensure an interactive experience, so secure your spot today!

Curious about BCDC puts together its slate of programs and events? Have ideas for how to better engage the broader Brown community from here back to College Hill? Simply looking for more opportunities to connect with friends and fellow alums, and draw on the power of community, during these…unprecedented… times?

Join members of the BCDC board for a conversation about board service on Sunday, May 31st, from 1-2:30PM at Bluestone Lane West End Cafe (coincident with the West End Library). We’ll gather over coffee and pastries to discuss why we think our BCDC community is so unique, your ideas for the future, and ways to get involved. Free to attend and open to alums from all eras who’ve ever had that inkling to give back in some way.

We want to hear from YOU! – what resonated with you and what you’d like to see more of. Our community wouldn’t be what it is without folks just like you gathering together to find fun and interesting ways to reconnect with and celebrate that special Ever True esprit.

Space is limited to ensure an intimate conversation, so register ASAP if you're able to join us! If the 31st doesn't work for you, but you're interested in learning more about getting involved with making Brunonian magic happen, shoot us an email at bcdccomms@gmail.com. Positions available include Co-President, VP, Secretary, communications roles, and more.

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting the Canady Foundation for the Arts, the DC-based nonprofit bringing culturally responsive arts education and theatre to the next generation of storytellers!

The Canady Foundation for the Arts (CFA) is a DC-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that shapes underrepresented storytellers ages 3-18 through arts education, theatre, and media training, equipping young people with the creative, professional, and leadership skills they need to tell their authentic stories and succeed in the creative workforce.

The CFA Repertory Theatre brings Black culture and diasporic storytelling to the stage, while the CFA Youth Improv program uses improvisational theatre as a tool for self-expression, trust-building, and social justice exploration. This year, CFA also launched its newest initiative, the CFA Broadway Studio, where students can train alongside Broadway professionals. Rounding out the programming is CFA Healing Arts, which harnesses therapeutic arts practices for collective well-being. CFA Rep has performed at iconic DC venues including the Kennedy Center, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the White House National Christmas Tree Lighting. CFA alumni have gone on to work with organizations such as Sesame Street Workshop, the Manhattan Theatre Club, and the Miami Herald.

Thank you to everyone who came out on Wednesday evening to enjoy a rooftop drink with BCDC and IPC DMV, and helped us toast to the indomitable Kim Wright-King '90 before she heads off to Angola for her latest diplomatic posting!

Wednesday was a delightful gathering across five decades of Brunonians, both reuniting decades-long friends and forging new bonds, and filled with stimulating conversation that carried on for hours. In other words, it was a true celebration of everything we're about at BCDC and IPC DMV! 🐻

If you missed this event, keep an eye out for additional happy hours and other ways to unwind in the warm-weather months. And consider checking out Betsy if you're ever on Capitol Hill and in the mood for either gin or a relaxing, tropical setting--they were wonderfully accommodating of our large group!

Many thanks to all who joined us on Saturday for our annual outing to Nationals Park with current students winding down a semester of taking classes and interning through the Brown in Washington (BiW) program!

While the Nats might not have come out on top, our intergenerational crew had a blast cheering them on, sharing DC stories and life advice, and watching as Star Wars Day festivities overtook the ballpark (including a brush with the Force for the indomitable Racing Presidents).

Join us in wishing this semester's BiW cohort luck on final exams and their move-out, and get ready to greet this summer's larger cohort of students interning in DC! Keep an eye out for them at BCDC events over the summer, and stay tuned for details on our annual summer networking night with BiW.

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Eaton Workshop, the one-of-a-kind boutique hotel in downtown DC that doubles as a vibrant hub for arts, culture, activism, and community!

Eaton DC is the flagship property of Eaton Workshop and operates on a simple but powerful premise: hospitality can be a vehicle for creativity and community. Far more than a place to rest your head, the hotel brings together locals and visitors alike as what it calls "kindred spirits" – people drawn to a space intentionally designed to inspire collaboration and conversation. Guest rooms are stocked with curated vinyl collections, books from the hotel's own library, and original artwork, offering a soulful respite to guests.

The cultural programming at Eaton is what truly sets it apart. Allegory, the hotel's award-winning speakeasy bar tucked behind a library, features an original mural by local artist Erik Thor Sandberg honoring civil rights icon Ruby Bridges. Wild Days, the rooftop bar and music venue, hosts DJs, live music, comedy, and special events against sweeping views of downtown DC. Eaton House, the hotel's three-floor coworking space, serves as an incubator for creatives and change-makers, open 24/7 to members and hotel guests alike. On the wellness front, Eaton offers a holistic program of yoga, massage therapy, and mindfulness programming rooted in care for both self and community.

To learn more about Eaton Workshop and experience this remarkable intersection of hospitality, art, and activism in the heart of our city, visit their website at https://www.eatonworkshop.com/en-us/dc-washington-dc/!

Kick off May with a relaxed, rooftop happy hour with BCDC and IPC DMV! (MAY 6 @ 5 - 6:30 PM)

We'll gather on Capitol Hill at The Betsy to celebrate the partnership among our wonderful Brunonian communities in the nation's capital, count down the days until the luckiest among us head up to College Hill for reunions and Commencement, and generally have a blast. We'll also give a hearty send-off to Kim Wright-King '90, who has been a vital force in our communities and will continue to be from afar, as she heads off to her next diplomatic posting in Angola!

Registrants can stop by anytime until 6:30 PM to get their first drink included with registration and take advantage of the amazing happy hour specials. Knowing the joy of DMV Brunonian merriment, we suspect that some of the group will linger well beyond the official happy hour to continue our festive conversations and greet anyone who is running behind!

Space in our group is limited, so secure your spot today! https://brownconnectplus.brown.edu/networks/events/247528

Last call for BCDC x Brown in Washington Game Night this Saturday (May 2)! As we cheer on the Nats against the Milwaukee Brewers, we'll be joined by the current cohort of Brown students spending the semester in DC. While it will be especially fun for Young Alumni who can share their post-grad experiences in DC with students, all Brunonians from across generations are warmly welcome to join the fun and forge communal bonds with the BiW crew!

We'll gather nearby at Walter's Sports Bar and Restaurant by 3:30 PM. Around 3:55 p.m., we'll walk over to Nationals Stadium for the game (BCDC reps will have your tickets ready). Stay as long or as little as you'd like, and see if you make it on the Jumbotron and win concert tickets like last year's group did!

Can't meet us at Walter's? Send us an email and let us know in due time so we can coordinate with you.

Tickets in our group section are limited, so secure your spot today! (Link in bio.)

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Adventure Theatre MTC Academy, the DC area's longest-running nonprofit dedicated to inspiring children to learn and love the art of theatre!

Located at Glen Echo Park and Rockville, Maryland, Adventure Theatre MTC has spent over 68 years bringing the magic of the stage to young audiences and aspiring performers across the Washington, DC region. The theatre has grown into a dual-purpose organization combining professional productions with a robust training academy. Each season, ATMTC produces five stage adaptations of beloved children's stories, serving tens of thousands of audience members from around the DC area.

The ATMTC Academy nurtures the next generation of performers through classes, workshops, and camps for students of all ages and experience levels. Whether students are interested in summer camps, after-school activities, or more rigorous pre-professional training, Adventure has a program that fits their goals – and alumni have gone on to careers spanning Broadway, national tours, film, TV, and beyond. The organization's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity runs through everything it does, from casting to curriculum, ensuring that theatre remains an accessible and transformative experience for all young people in the community.

Many thanks to all who joined us on Earth Day for Music & the Earth: Songs for World Peace, featuring environmental music by historian, musician, and BCDC board member Priya Parrotta '12!

Brunonians joined fellow DC community members at Busboys and Poets to experience VIVA--an immersive, multicultural, multilingual show that pairs original music with views that convey the beautiful ecological, cultural, and artistic diversity of our Earth. The show was followed by a soulful, wide-ranging discussion that touched on themes of world music, decolonization, environmental communication, and more. The conversation was deeply enriched by a diverse, multigenerational audience that included individuals with backgrounds in environmental law & policy, activism, visual artists, poetry, and environmental education for kids.

Many thanks to Priya for organizing this deeply meaningful program and inviting the BCDC community to the conversation and to fellow BCDC board member Hannah Schafer '10 for helping organize our outing! You can learn more about Priya's music and writing by visiting priyaparrotta.com and by following her on social media.
