If you’re passionate about helping your community strengthen pediatric disaster preparedness, the Disaster Networking Collaborative (DNC) Playback Series was created with you in mind.

Across ten conversations with pediatric disaster experts, one theme emerged:
Preparedness is more than equipment or protocols. It’s how we think, communicate, and work together when it matters most.

The DNC Playback Series highlights:

• Why the first minute of an emergency shapes everything
• How small gaps in clarity can ripple across an entire response
• Why pediatric needs require a different level of planning
• What leaders have learned from real drills, real events, and real families
• How we can build confidence, not fear, through shared learning

This series is for anyone who wants to get involved in strengthening readiness where they live: EMS partners, ED nurses, pediatric teams, public health planners, hospital leaders, community organizations, and regional collaborators.

The full DNC Playback Series is available on PPN Learn and offers CE credit.

PPN hub sites Lurie Children's Hospital and Children’s National Hospital recently teamed up to participate in a city-wide mass casualty incident exercise. This medical response and surge exercise featured the Lurie Children's team utilizing a rapid DNA technology to reunify children with their families during the event. This work reflects the collaboration across partners and hub sites made possible by PPN.

Mary E. Fallat, MD presented the 2025 Scudder Oration on Trauma at last year's Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons. In her remarks, she spoke of how Norton Children's serves as not only a regional hub site for PPN, but as the coordinating resource for the PPN trauma/burn domain. Local and national partnerships, including those with EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center (EMSC) and National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP), are critical to improving pediatric burn care efforts, Fallat said.

In 2024, the National Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) conducted the first comprehensive assessment of readiness to care for children among 15,293 EMS and fire-based agencies nationwide. The results provide the first full picture of readiness to care for children in out-of-hospital settings. One key finding was that 80% of EMS agencies who participated received a score of 12/12 on the “Equipment and Supplies” domain, which reflects years of effort driven by emergency care leaders and EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center.
