We're not goofing around! You can double your impact now with a gift to Woodley House.

At last night's Movie Benefit, we introduced an exciting matching gift opportunity made possible by The McDonnell Foundation and Isabel & Jerry Jasinowski. Together, these generous donors are now matching every donation to Woodley House, up to a total of $20,000. This is the largest matching gift opportunity we've ever presented at the Movie Benefit.

If you haven't yet made your gift, visit our Donate page at https://woodleyhouse.org/ways-to-give/ , to have your donation doubled. This means your dollars go even further in supporting men and women who struggle with mental illness and face the risk of homelessness.

Thanks to all who contributed to the success of last night's Movie Benefit, and all who joined us at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center for a memorable event. Photos to come soon!

On Sunday at Woodley House's 29th Annual Movie Benefit, we'll honor our longtime board member Vincent Keane with the Donald A. Brown Rose Award 🌹

The Rose Award recognizes individuals for their dedication to Woodley House and the people we serve. As the former President & CEO of Unity Health Care, Vince has added immeasurably to the quality of life for so many in our community. He led Unity for 31 years, over which time it grew from a one-room site to DC's largest network of community health centers.

Since Vince joined Woodley House's board of directors in 2014, he's played a key role in our own expansion to reach more Washingtonians who face mental illness and the risk of chronic homelessness. Our Executive Director Ann Chauvin describes Vince as "a champion for the disenfranchised in DC" and a "brilliant, mission-driven leader."

Help us honor Vincent Keane at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center on Sunday, November 16. Only a few tickets remain available, so act now! Visit our Movie Benefit page to reserve your seats: https://woodleyhouse.org/movie-benefit-2025

The great Diane Keaton passed away last month at age 79. We're pleased to be honoring her by revisiting one of her signature roles in SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (2003) at this year's Movie Benefit.

In addition to being a movie star, Diane was a strong advocate for mental health, shining a light on mental illness in her family. In 2020, she published a memoir, BROTHER & SISTER, about her relationship with her brother Randy, who had diagnosed bipolar disorder and schizoid personality disorder.

"I think a lot of families go through this, and it’s sort of unwritten and unexplored. ... And why shouldn’t it be explored? That I think is my question. Why didn’t I explore it more, why did I explore it too late?” Diane said in an interview about her book.

At Woodley House, we strongly believe in destigmatizing mental illness. Since our founding in 1958, we've helped tens of thousands of men and women on their own recovery journeys. These individuals are our family members, our neighbors, our friends.

Come see Diane Keaton in SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE on Sunday, November 16, at Woodley House's 29th Annual Movie Benefit. Help us raise critical funds so more people can overcome their struggles and find their way home.

We're excited to share that the feature film for Woodley House's 29th Annual Movie Benefit will be the classic romantic comedy SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE (2003), starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

Come see why Vanity Fair recently included SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE on its list of "The 42 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time." We're especially glad to be showing it as a tribute to the great Diane Keaton, who left us this month.

Frances McDormand, Keanu Reeves and Amanda Peet fill out “a brilliant cast” (Washington Post). And Nancy Meyers directed the film that critics called “such a joy” (Entertainment Weekly) and “something special” (Rolling Stone).

Our Movie Benefit is coming up on Sunday, November 16, at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center. Get your tickets and sponsorship today! https://woodleyhouse.org/movie-benefit-2025/🍿🎬

This year, our Board President Jeremiah Watts is celebrating 10 years since co-founding his firm DWatts Construction. Coincidentally, it's also a decade since he joined the Woodley House Board of Directors.

Jeremiah is deeply invested in Woodley House's mission supporting individuals and families who struggle with mental illness. And we're incredibly fortunate to have him and DWatts returning as Marquee Sponsors of Woodley House's 29th Annual Movie Benefit.

"My colleagues and I always have a fantastic time at the Movie Benefit—it's truly a great evening for a great cause," Jeremiah says.

We hope you'll join him and the rest of the DWatts crew on the red carpet on Sunday, November 16!

It's October 10, and Woodley House is marking World Mental Health Day.

Today is a reminder that no one should have to face mental illness alone. We need our families, friends, colleagues and communities to help build a world in which mental wellbeing is broadly accessible.

Woodley House's vision is that all District of Columbia residents with mental health disorders will have a dignified place to live, services needed to thrive, and respect and inclusion in the community—and are part of a world in which mental health is viewed as health. Today and every day, we'll keep working to achieve that vision.

Check out Mental Health Day resources from our friends at National Council for Mental Wellbeing to learn more.

A bittersweet farewell to two of Woodley House's finest: Last Friday, we celebrated Maria Paipa and Tyrone Cartwright as they prepare to retire after 40 combined years at Woodley House.

Woodley House residents, staff, partners, family, and board members past & present came together for a wonderful evening with Maria, our senior director of programs, and Tyrone, our chief financial officer. We kicked things off at our Valenti House group home, and continued the festivities nearby at LiLLiES Restaurant & Bar (featuring special cookies from The Lemonade Bakery).

Maria and Tyrone leave an incredible legacy of work and care at Woodley House. We'll continue to carry it forward!

October is Awareness Month, which means it's a great time to consider the legacy you want to leave for your family and community.

Estate planning isn't just for the wealthy -- it's for anyone who wants to maintain control of their assets and have their wishes carried out. Planned giving can be an important part of this, allowing you to continue supporting the nonprofit organizations you care about into the future.

We hope you'll watch our short video, "Planned Giving: How you can make a difference for Woodley House," to hear why legacy giving is important to our supporters and friends. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/aD5kkKa83Xs

We're very fortunate to have Yavar Moghimi, MD, as the newest member of Woodley House's Board of Directors. Welcome, Dr. Moghimi!

Yavar is the Behavioral Health Medical Director at Cityblock Health. He also is Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Previously, Yavar was Chief Psychiatric Medical Officer at AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, where he was responsible for leading all psychiatric and behavioral health strategy, policy development, and clinical oversight for a Medicaid health plan covering 110,000+ members.

"I'm excited to be a part of Woodley House because I've seen the ways that their model of embedding clinical care with housing can completely transform the lives of those living with severe mental illness in a way that other parts of our mental health system fall short," Dr. Moghimi says.

"Woodley House offers a continuum of housing supports and services that allows for a stable foundation for recovery, reduces system costs, and helps maintain the humanity and dignity of each client that comes through their doors," he adds.

We're honored to have Yavar's expertise and passion guiding Woodley House's work, along with the rest of our dedicated Board.
