Yesterday, Woodley House Executive Director Ann Chauvin testified to the The Council of the District of Columbia about a proposed funding cut to our crisis stabilization program, Crossing Place. Ann shared that, if the DC Department of Behavioral Health is allowed to eliminate its contract with Woodley House for Crossing Place, it would mean higher healthcare costs and worse care for some of DC's most vulnerable residents.

Ann testified alongside Betty Gentle, Senior Director of Advocacy & Public Policy at SOME (So Others Might Eat), who voiced similar concerns about the proposed cut to SOME's Jordan House program. Thank you to Councilmember Christina Henderson, Councilmember Zachary Parker, Councilmember Matt Frumin, and the rest of the DC Council for considering our testimonies and understanding the urgent need to restore funding for community-based crisis beds in fiscal 2027.

We are not done fighting!

Louis is one of the longest-serving team members of Woodley House’s Food Pantry. For years, Louis has played a central role in ensuring that residents and neighbors alike have access to essential food, in a city where food insecurity remains all too prevalent.

Louis’s journey began nearly 20 years ago when he was experiencing homelessness, and entered a local program through Green Door (now MBI Health Services). There, he was able to access healthcare and therapy, and got connected with Woodley House for housing. From that point on, Woodley House became a constant in his life.

When Woodley House opened our Food Pantry in 2011, Louis became deeply involved as a volunteer team member. Over the past 15 years, our small pantry has grown from a small initiative into a vital resource for both Woodley House residents and the broader community.

For Louis, the pantry was never just about distributing food—it’s about building relationships. “Once you have clients coming into the pantry, you get to know people’s names, faces, what they like and what they don’t like—as friends,” he says. His approach is rooted in dignity and compassion. Even when people arrive after closing time, he makes sure they feel welcomed: “I would let them know that the pantry closes, but we will never turn people away. Everybody has or should have the right to get some food.”

In recent months, Louis has stepped back from his work in the pantry due to health concerns. Still, his connection to the Woodley House community remains strong, and he looks forward to the simple joys of spending time with fellow residents in our Supported Independent Living program. “We have a group of men that know each other, love each other, and talk to each other,” he says.

Looking back, Louis is clear about what Woodley House has meant to him: “Woodley House is an amazing place—I love it.” Now, he’s ready for the next chapter at the Food Pantry and in his own life. “I’m 68 years old—it’s time for someone else to do it, to pass the torch.”

The Woodley House Food Pantry is serving more community members than ever, as grocery retail prices continue to rise and government nutrition benefits are reduced. We hope you'll consider organizing a food drive this spring with your school, workplace, house of worship, or neighborhood to help stock our pantry shelves!

In 2025, our small but mighty Food Pantry fulfilled more than 1,000 orders from 172 unique households. This represented a 60% increase in demand compared to the year before.

Woodley House will keep stepping up to support our neighbors in need. Join our fight against food insecurity in the District of Columbia. Visit our website to learn more: https://woodleyhouse.org/ways-to-give/ -pantry

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This year, we know that community is more important than ever in helping people on their recovery journeys.

At Woodley House, we ensure all our residents and program participants know they are part of a loving, vibrant community of neighbors, staff and supporters. We work with our partners NAMI and National Council for Mental Wellbeing to advocate for mental health awareness in the DC region and everywhere.

And we hope that you will help break the silence in your own community! When we share stories, we reduce the stigma around mental illness, and we let others know they're not alone.

On April 17, Woodley House gathered for our annual all-staff meeting. It's always a wonderful opportunity to see all our colleagues face-to-face, reorient ourselves to our mission, recognize milestones, and have some fun.

This year, we had an extra-special treat: an original poem written by our very own Kenyatte Wanzor, manager of our Permanent Supportive Housing program. Kenyatte and the PSH team debuted the poem, "More Than A Home," an ode to how a stable home can change lives.

As the poem describes, the search for a new home often includes "winding paths and nights unsure." But at Woodley House, we know the journey is worth it. Thanks to Kenyatte and the PSH case managers for all they do every day, helping our clients find "a place where hope and strength reside."

Sade Yasmin Ogun has long been dedicated to supporting individuals at the risk of homelessness. Born and raised in Landover, Maryland, Sade was encouraged by her immigrant parents to always give back, and started volunteering in DC shelters when she was just 8 years old. She earned a degree in Architecture and Design from Howard University but later transitioned to Social Work and Human Services, inspired by the values her parents instilled in her. She often jokes with her mom that “it’s her fault!”

Sade joined Woodley House in February 2025 as a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) case manager, and was promoted to a supervisory role in our Valenti House group home. She manages day-to-day operations while ensuring clients receive consistent, compassionate support.

During Sade’s interview process, she realized she knew our team member Nieshia Kornegay, and was surprised to learn that Nieshia had been at Woodley House for more than a decade. In a field where frequent job transitions are common, Sade saw Nieshia's longevity as a reflection of the organization’s strength. “I really appreciate that there are so many people at Woodley House who have been working here for YEARS,” she said. “That told me this was a place I wanted to be.”

Sade is deeply committed to client interaction, which goes beyond formal case management. She emphasized the power of little moments with clients, making sure they feel comfortable stopping by her office to chat or just hang out. Sade is also a strong advocate for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, recognizing that sustainable care for others begins with taking care of oneself. Outside of Woodley House, she channels her energy and creativity into being an Xtreme Hip Hop Step instructor at her local gym.

Whether she’s leading her team, supporting residents, or hosting spontaneous pizza and dance parties, Sade brings warmth, structure, and dedication to Woodley House. “You can tell the people here really love what they do,” Sade said with a smile. “I hope that can be my story years from now, too.”

This month, Woodley House team members past and present gathered to dedicate a young Japanese Maple tree in memory of Edith "Edee" Michiko Maeda. In 1960, Edee became co-director of Woodley House, alongside our founder Joan Doniger, and eventually served as executive director for nearly three decades until her retirement in 1999. Edee passed away in 2023 at age 95.

Over the course of her long tenure at Woodley House, she dramatically expanded our services, including creating our crisis stabilization home, launching our Supported Independent Living program, and purchasing new properties. Most importantly, Edee built a solid foundation for Woodley House's future.

The Japanese Maple tree, in the garden of our Cornerstone House residence, will "memorialize Edee Maeda as Woodley House’s great and longest-running leader," said our current executive director, Ann Chauvin. The tree also "is a reminder that Woodley House has roots here in DC and will continue to grow just as Edee wanted," Ann said.
