Earlier this month, three NDI team members — Katie Metz, Kelley Land and Becky MacDicken — traveled to Topeka, Kansas to facilitate a three-day, in-person training titled Empowering Clients to Embrace Financial Wellness.

During the March 3–5 training, Kansas Workforce professionals learned how to provide financial wellness education and information to people with disabilities and their supporters, with a focus on youth and young adults.

Together, participants explored practical tools and strategies to help individuals build financial knowledge, confidence and long-term stability.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Topeka and for your commitment to expanding financial wellness opportunities in your communities.

Marisol’s journey to an accessible vehicle began two years ago.

A woman with cerebral palsy, Marisol can walk short distances but uses a power wheelchair for longer distances. After exploring her options, she applied through New York’s Adult Career and Continuing Education Services–Vocational Rehabilitation and worked through a detailed planning and bidding process to modify a vehicle that met her needs and budget.

By May 2024, she was driving her own modified van.

Access to transportation supports independence, employment and participation in community life.

NDI offers practical tools to help individuals explore their options, including the Funding and Affordable Financing Options Guide and the Selecting or Upfitting a Vehicle for Accessibility Guide.

She later worked through a bidding process, secured financing, purchased a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica and had modifications installed, including a power ramp, chair securement with back-up tie-downs and a driver seat adaptation. The final slide states that all modifications were completed and she was driving her van by May 2024.

Steve spent nearly a decade living in a nursing home after his mother could no longer care for him. Fifteen years later, he is living independently in the community with the supports he needs.

But independence does not mean freedom without transportation.

For years, limited transportation options kept Steve from being fully free. Owning his own wheelchair accessible van changed that. It gave him the ability to go where he wants, when he wants - without relying on an inaccessible system.

Access to transportation supports independence, opportunity and community living.
