✨ Meet the 2025-2026 Community Medicine Fellows! ✨
First up, Julia 👏

🔸Name: Julia Ruby Devito, MD

🔸Medical School: University of California, Riverside

🔸Residency Training: Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles (KP LAMC)

🔸Why a Community Medicine Fellowship?
I chose a Community Medicine Fellowship to deepen my skills in advocacy, curriculum development, and health equity. I believe medicine extends beyond the clinic walls, and I want to bridge communities, systems, and medical education to better serve patients where they live, learn, and grow.

🔸Fun Fact: I was born at KP LAMC—so completing my training and fellowship here feels like a full-circle journey.

Meet Dr. Kun Chhai Meas!

Medical School: Frank H. Netter School of Medicine

Residency Training: UC Irvine

Site: KP Orange County

Why CM: In starting the KP Community Medicine Fellowship, I hope to expand my ability to give patient care beyond the clinic. My hope is to learn how I can help people in the homes and neighborhoods where they spend most of their lives, and not just in my exam room where they spend just 20 minutes every few months. My efforts will be put into learning how to assess for patient needs in these environments, and how I can help follow through with helping them where they are!

Meet Dr. Layla Farrahi!

Medical School: Western University of Health Sciences

Residency Training: California Hospital Medical Center— Dignity Health

Why CM: Dr. Farrahi was born to a large, diverse family in Los Angeles where attended USC and studied public health. She focused her research on addiction medicine and became invested in substance abuse amongst the most vulnerable communities in Los Angeles. She continued her medical training at Dignity Health- California Hospital and Eisner Federally Qualified Health Centers Clinic, a bustling community hospital center serving the urban, downtown Los Angeles area. During her training, she learned to be resourceful at navigating patients’ needs and empowering patients’ medical autonomy as well. Layla is excited to join the Kaiser System and focus on her fellowship in community medicine for the next year, hoping to learn how to become a strong advocate for the community as a whole, to represent the largest number of patients. She hopes to mentor other aspiring medical professionals to serve their community as well!

For fun: Layla enjoys spending time outdoors whenever she can- either at beach or hiking any of the LA trails! 🥾🌊

Meet Dr. Cristina Monterroza!

Medical School: University of California Davis School of Medicine

Residency Training: Harbor UCLA Family Medicine

Why CM: Dr. Monterroza is originally from San Francisco and grew up in a mixed raced Salvadoran/American household. Before medical school, she joined the Peace Corps and was stationed in Guatemala. She developed a deep appreciation for community medicine and grassroots community health improvement efforts from working with other community organizers, nonprofit organizations, and local physicians. During her training at Harbor UCLA, she was able to care for underrepresented Latino minorities in a county system. Here she learned how to navigate healthcare systems and advocate for patient needs. Cristina hopes to partner with community members during her fellowship to implement preventative health strategies and focused health education related to chronic disease management. She is also looking forward to developing as a teacher and a mentor.

For fun: Cristina enjoys reading, playing the guitar, salsa dancing, and riding her bike on beach trails!

With the help of former CM fellow & resident , almost 200 food packages and meals were distributed. Food insecurity is worse than ever due to the COVID pandemic. Consider volunteering or donating to your local food pantry. If you know anyone in need in San Diego, you can direct them to Father Joe’s Villages for food packages or warm meals, three times a day. No questions asked. @ Father Joe's Villages
