Media relations is certainly Successful media relations comes down to being genuine, creative, and direct. In fact, the need for media relations is becoming more and more important as there are so many types of media are emerging. We need to get rid of what I call “factory farm public relations” where we churn out generic releases sent to hundreds of people at a time, and instead get to know and connect with our audience. At MatchMap Media, we use old-fashioned techniques to apply to the evolving new media. After all, by definition the word media is just plural for medium. Matchmap Media finds the right medium for you to reach your target audience in three simple steps— Matching, Mapping, and Media. The general concepts are relatable and exchangeable to the process of most traditional public relations shops.

Friends, I have an idea and want your feedback. I have been doing media relations pitching for 20 years. Over the last few years, for many reasons, I have seen so many good ones just not get picked up at all. And it is such a shame. If I started a platform where people could see/submit stories that didn’t get picked up so others could see them, would you be interested in seeing what amazing stories didn’t make it in? Picture for boosting purposes.
1. For my PR friends: Would PR people want to offer this information? Would you all not want to admit your pitch didn’t get picked up? But you would allow it to be seen by people on this platform.
2. For my activist friends: What do you think? I know many people seem frustrated when the press doesn’t cover things. Would this help? Would you submit? Sometimes, we do activist events, and no one knows they happened, and this would help get the word out about which stories are not covered.
3. For everyone else: Would you be curious about what ideas were sent to be covered but were turned down? How about a platform where you could vote on whether you wanted to see those stories covered by more media?
The rules: It would have to be a story pitched to one or many news outlets that they either turned down or did not respond to for at least one week. I will not vet these pitches other than to ensure no libel or hate speech. To submit, you would need to send me:
Who: The people who are pitching it
What: A brief description of the pitch. One sentence. A link to more info.
When: When you sent it
Where: Where you sent it (for example, press release to 20 national reporters, press in New York market, or to New York Times)

Thoughts? Ideas to make this better? What do you want to see?
