The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health is the voice of accredited public health education, representing the CEPH-accredited member schools and programs of public health. ASPPH strengthens the nation’s public health schools and programs and improves global health by:
Fostering quality education and practice-based training for the next generation of public health workers
Promoting public health as a career option
Monitoring trends relevant to public health education
Facilitating collaborations across schools and programs
Developing partnerships across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors
Advancing public health education that meets 21st-century demands is ASPPH’s core mission. To ensure public health workers have the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes, ASPPH:
Develops competencies and learning outcomes across the educational continuum
Sponsors fellowships and internships that offer “real-world” practice experiences
Promotes the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential
Leads Framing the Future, an interdisciplinary task force that is reconsidering public health education
As an advocate for the interests of academic public health, ASPPH:
Safeguards and expands the $1.5 billion-plus pool of federal grants and contracts to public health schools and programs for education, research, and practice
Reviews existing and proposed federal laws and regulations and advances policy positions
Strategic partnerships power the ASPPH agenda, with collaborations across public health disciplines and the wider community of health professionals. ASPPH is the successor to the Association of Schools of Public Health, established in 1953. In 2013, membership was expanded to include CEPH-accredited programs of public health.

This is Public Health Global Grant Ambassador, Mr. Filimin Niyongabo, is a postgraduate student in the Master of Environmental and Occupational Health (MEOH) program at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH). He is working to strengthen resilience to floods and landslides in Uganda’s Elgon region.

With support from the TIPH Global Grant, MakSPH partnered with Mbale City authorities to raise awareness of climate-related hazards in the Elgon region. Together, they reached more than 2,200 students across five primary and secondary schools.

You can find Niyongabo strengthening environmental resilience and inspiring lifelong climate stewardship by speaking to students about floods and landslides at Nkoma Secondary School, leading tree-planting activities with learners and teachers at North Road Primary School in Mbale City, presenting this important work at the 19th Makerere University Environmental Health Students Association (MUEHSA) Conference, and more!

Niyongabo’s piece of advice: “Public Health, more so Environmental and Occupational Health is not well appreciated in Uganda especially among many stakeholders including political and technical decision-makers. Therefore, one has to start pursuing a public health career with determination and readiness to engage all stakeholders in all strata of society. The famous saying that prevention is better than cure should be prioritized and actualized in the way we do things.”

Dr. Ali Khan, Dean of UNMC College of Public Health, emphasizes that achieving health for all requires a well-trained public health workforce and advanced science. Public health is about translating knowledge into real solutions that improve lives. We need to not just understand the problems, but also how to solve them.
