The Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health is the voice of accredited public health education, representing the CEPH-accredited member schools and programs of public health. ASPPH strengthens the nation’s public health schools and programs and improves global health by:
Fostering quality education and practice-based training for the next generation of public health workers
Promoting

public health as a career option
Monitoring trends relevant to public health education
Facilitating collaborations across schools and programs
Developing partnerships across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors
Advancing public health education that meets 21st-century demands is ASPPH’s core mission. To ensure public health workers have the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes, ASPPH:
Develops competencies and learning outcomes across the educational continuum
Sponsors fellowships and internships that offer “real-world” practice experiences
Promotes the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential
Leads Framing the Future, an interdisciplinary task force that is reconsidering public health education
As an advocate for the interests of academic public health, ASPPH:
Safeguards and expands the $1.5 billion-plus pool of federal grants and contracts to public health schools and programs for education, research, and practice
Reviews existing and proposed federal laws and regulations and advances policy positions
Strategic partnerships power the ASPPH agenda, with collaborations across public health disciplines and the wider community of health professionals. ASPPH is the successor to the Association of Schools of Public Health, established in 1953. In 2013, membership was expanded to include CEPH-accredited programs of public health.

The USF College of Public Health is developing core competencies reflecting attributes that public health organizations value in their disease intervention professionals. These core competencies will provide a foundational framework for practice and academic organizations, and advances ASPPH’s commitment to support employer efforts to recruit, train, and retain a robust disease intervention certified workforce.

Led by ASPPH’s Center for Public Health Workforce Development, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and in collaboration with the National Board of Public Health Examiners (Certification in Public Health - CPH, by NBPHE), the CDI Project is building a national certification program and educational pathways for the disease intervention workforce.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth College of Public Health is developing comprehensive frameworks that incentivize CDI certification and maintenance of certification, assess barriers to certification, and propose research-supported solutions. This initiative aims to increase participation in the CDI certification program, thereby enhancing the disease intervention workforce’s capacity to manage and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

This work advances ASPPH’s commitment to support employer efforts to recruit, train, and retain a robust disease intervention certified workforce.

ASPPH convened leaders across academic public health to discuss our new report, Healthy Longevity: Public Health’s Next Frontier, A Framework for Research, Education, Practice, and Policy. The ASPPH Presents webinar featured expert members of our Healthy Longevity Task Force and explored how public health can lead the national effort to extend healthspan, not just lifespan. In response to the National Academy of Medicine’s call to action, the framework outlines a bold vision, known as Public Health 4.0, that reimagines the role of academic public health in fostering long, healthy, engaged lives for all.

The report provides a roadmap for integrating healthy longevity into core areas of education, research, practice, and policy, with recommendations for how our members can implement a life course approach to prevention and aging equity.

As Task Force Chair Dr. Linda Fried emphasized in the webinar, “Today we add a fourth goal (Public Health 4.0) to make the creation of long lives with health, or healthy longevity, a blueprint for the next generation of academic public health and our public health system.”

We invite you to explore the framework and join us in advancing this critical mission to ensure that longer lives are not only possible, but lived with health, purpose, and equity.

Our June ASPPH Presents webinar, Advocacy in Action: Advancing Public Health in a Shifting Political Landscape, was a policy update and a call to action. Held in conjunction with ASPPH’s member-only 2025 ASPPH Sections Retreat, it served as an advocacy briefing with a deeper, more strategic discussion for ASPPH members as well as the broader public health community.

As public health faces escalating political and budgetary pressures, strategic advocacy is more important than ever. This session highlighted ASPPH’s current federal policy priorities and provided practical insights on how academic public health professionals can engage with decision-makers, build coalitions, and communicate the impact of their work in today’s charged environment.
