Today is my Beautycounter anniversary. Two years ago I decided to join this company as a consultant not because I though I was good at sales, not because I had a lot of free time, not because I thought I would get rich doing this; but because I passionately believed that clean cosmetics had been an instrumental part of lessening my toxic load and helping me heal my thyroid. I also loved that not only Beautycounter was making amazing, high-performing clean products, but also because they were leading the efforts for the industry to change. Doing advocacy is one of the most powerful tools citizens have and I wanted to be a part of that as well. I have loved every minute and I am proud of Beautycounter’s accomplishments.

Today, while away from home and on what could be a very stressful experience, I see my clean cosmetic products as a calming self-care ritual that brings me joy, peace of mind, and better skin! (And who wouldn’t love all these travel-size minis!) 💗

Thank you to all of you who have tried (and most of you also fell in love with) the products. To those that have referred me your friends and family. To those that maybe haven’t tried them yet, but have learned from my advocacy efforts. And to those who will eventually love them in the future :)

Cheers to

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘁? ⁣

Many people argue that January 1st is a day like any other, or that waiting for January 1st to change your habits and overindulging during the Holidays does not make any sense. I agree with them. Yet, I do see the New Year as an opportunity to start a clean slate, it is a break –even if just mental- from the everyday routine. If anything at all, for those of us with OCD tendencies, January 1st is a nice number to start any new endeavor. 1️⃣•1️⃣

So, today, it is definitely Day 1 for me. It is Day 1 of a recommitment to my health. Last year I worked hard on my mental health, and definitely made abundant progress there, but my physical health slipped backwards. Back on thyroid medication, and with two new gut-related diagnosis (C-diff bacteria, and SIBO), I was -physically speaking- feeling like crap. The effort I knew that was required to get back on a healing road overwhelmed me, scared me, and I didn’t feel like I was ready for it. It also didn’t help that one of the herbicides I needed for my SIBO protocol was backordered for months. ⁣

But today is the day. I reckon the road ahead is steep. My gut hasn’t felt good in months -I can barely touch my stomach- I am at my heaviest weight, have tons of inflammation, my skin has seen better days, and I am constantly tired and craving foods I know are not good for me. (Trust me, deciding to have a picture of me today in this post was NOT easy). ⁣

Be that as it may, I know the way back, I came up with a comprehensive healing protocol that I will be following and sharing more in the coming days, and I will be supported my functional doctor and a fellow Nutritional Therapist. I am excited to share with you all the progress along the way and to have you keep me accountable. ⁣

So, here we go, New Year, new month, new day, new opportunity to course-correct, to restart: Day 1. Let’s heal!

🍡🍿🍭🍬
Did you know that artificial colors are present in hundreds of products in the US beyond those that we would expect to find them in? For example, canned fruit, yogurt, pickles, popcorn, oatmeal or even white marshmallows -which use Blue 1 to make them brighter.

Although the FDA maintains that no causal relationship between artificial food dyes and hyperactivity could be established for children, several newer studies prove that artificial food colorings may have an negative effect on the behavior of children. Parents need to be informed.

In Europe for instance, these artificial dyes are rarely found. After a study in the UK determined a link between food coloring and hyperactivity, products that include these colorings as ingredients also need to include a warning label. Most manufactures opt to remove the synthetic food dyes and use natural dyes instead.

A similar bill is currently under review in California. If passed, even if it only applies to the state of California, it could have a trickle effect to the rest of the country. Awareness and education are extremely important and educated parents can vote with their dollars. Chains like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Aldi, have already gone largely dye-free in their products, for instance.
Personally, I like to err on the side of caution. I am not in favor of fear-mongering, but when the mounting evidence is so clear, transparency and empowerment of the consumer are the way to go.

As a general rule, we avoid candy, refined sugar products, and other highly processed foods in our household, and when I do very occasionally buy them, I try to buy higher quality and look for products that do not contain artificial dyes, even if they are a bit more expensive. Relationship or not, most people who meet my son remark on how calm he is compared to his peers. I’d like to keep it that way, thank you!

🍭 How about you? Were you aware of this potential link? Have you noticed any connection between your children’s consumption of these foods and their behavior? Would you look for alternative products if you saw a label highlighting this connection? Share your thoughts.

Biking is my new therapy.

I am lucky to ride with an amazing group of women who push me out of my comfort zone and encourage me. Today was a special ride as it was my personal distance record. I am exhausted but proud and inspired. Here’s to many more miles to come with my crew.

This is a Public Service Announcement. 📣

🩸 The is facing a severe shortage of blood as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. I urge you to consider giving blood if you are able to.

🩸It is such an easy way to have a huge impact in someone’s life.

🩸I recently donated and learned something super interesting. I am considered a “Pediatric Blood Donor”. Not only am I type O negative -which only 7% of the population have and is the one most used for emergencies, but I am also CMV negative which only about 15% adults are.

🩸What Is CMV?

CMV (cytomegalovirus) is a flu-like virus that most people are exposed to at some point in their lives. You may have already been exposed to CMV without knowing it, because most people infected with CMV have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, CMV can be quite serious for babies and people with weakened immune systems.

🩸What Does CMV Negative Mean?

As with other viruses, once you have had CMV, your body will produce antibodies needed to fight the infection. Thus, if you ever had CMV, it’s likely you are “positive” for the antibodies; if you never had CMV, you are considered “CMV negative” and haven’t produced antibodies against the virus.

CMV is so common that up to 85% of us will be “CMV positive” by age 40.

🩸How Do You Get CMV?

CMV is contagious. It is passed through close contact with bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, urine, breast milk and more.

🩸Why Do Newborn Babies Need CMV Negative Blood?

CMV is generally harmless to healthy kids and adults, but it can be fatal to newborns. For this reason, babies needing transfusions as part of their medical care should only receive CMV negative blood from donors who have not been exposed to CMV.

🩸If you, like me, happen to have O negative, CMV negative blood, your blood donation is urgently needed to help newborns and premature babies. Aside from an immense satisfaction you also get a Baby Brigade Donor pin like the one I got.

🩸Regardless of your CMV status and blood type, any donation is greatly needed. Please make the time to schedule an appointment today!

Yesterday was 😎

Remember that just like your skin, you also need to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. ☀️

Things to remember when you buy sunglasses:

🕶 Make sure that they indicate they block 100% of UV rays. (This us the single most important thing!!!)
🕶 Bigger is better. The more coverage from the sunglasses the less sun damage on the eyes.
🕶 Darker lenses don’t necessarily mean more protection. Check the specs/tags instead.
🕶 Polarized lenses cut glare not UV. This may make some activities more enjoyable but it doesn’t protect from UV damage.
🕶 Have fun and make a statement!

When I look back at my life, I feel that a turning point in my relationship with health was my Hashimoto’s diagnosis back in 2015.

I had always been a very healthy person, and never thought I would be suffering from an autoimmune condition. (Wait, I have what? me? My body is attacking my own thyroid? 🤯🤯)

This diagnosis led to a -still ongoing- process of reconnecting with my body, of looking at root causes instead of quick fixes, of being more aware of what went in my body and on my body, of endless trial and error of what was the adequate “diet” for me and the right amount of exercise, of ever-changing lists of foods of what I can, or cannot eat, of figuring how this dis-ease was affecting my dream of becoming a mother... etc. It felt like all of a sudden, my life revolved around this one issue. ⁣

And sometimes, I wished so hard that I could just go back to those careless days of eating whatever I wanted, of going to a restaurant and not have to drive the waiter nuts with a thousand questions, to sign-up for a marathon and train my behind off if I wanted, to not have a cabinet full of supplements and vitamins that I needed to feel better... ⁣

Although still a work in progress, I am learning that my diagnosis doesn’t define me, that I can still enjoy food and eating out socially, that I have learned to love other physical activities that perhaps I had not considered before, that I can still have a thousand wishes. ✨✨

This is my journey, and thanks to it I found a passion to share what I have learned along the way with others ,so that like me, you can also live a vibrant, healthier and happier life.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣
