An important update from my heart šŸ«¶šŸ¾

Serving families through Healthy Home Pediatrics has been one of the greatest honors of my life. What started in 2019 as a vision for slower, more intentional care grew into a community rooted in health, dignity, and peace.

And now… the season is shifting.

After deep reflection, I’ve made the decision to transition out of solo practice at Healthy Home Pediatrics. This choice wasn’t sudden. It’s thoughtful, prayerful, and aligned with what I and my family need in this chapter.

As part of this transition, Healthy Home Pediatrics is available for purchase by a physician or physician group who wants to step into an established, sustainable primary care practice in the DMV. If you know someone who may be interested, an inquiry form is available to learn more.

I’m also stepping into new work… healthcare leadership (for an organization that I don't own), continued coaching and mentorship, and finally finishing the books I’ve been writing for years.

To support my own health and clarity during this time, I’m also taking a social media sabbatical to reset, rest, and prioritize what matters most. I will shift the focus to Harmony in Practice and the newsletter. Feel free to sign up to stay in touch!

Thank you for your trust, your grace, and the many ways you’ve walked alongside me and this practice. Community has always mattered to me… and it always will.

In health, happiness, and peace,
Dr. J 🧔

If you've been feeling burned out in medicine, READ THIS 🧔

You don’t have to quit medicine to find peace.
And you don’t have to disappear, burn it all down, or start over to feel aligned again.

So many women in healthcare have been told that the only way to breathe is to walk away.
But peace doesn’t come from leaving your calling… it comes from no longer being at war with your life.

You can love your work and protect your wellbeing.
You can evolve your role, redefine your pace, and set boundaries that honor your capacity.
You can choose meaningful, sustainable work instead of constant grinding.

Reinvention doesn’t always mean starting over.
Sometimes it means reimagining what already exists and allowing yourself to do it differently.

Inside Harmony in Practice, I teach women how to find alignment whether they stay in traditional clinical roles, shift their approach, or explore something new alongside medicine.

No pressure. No one-size-fits-all path. Just clarity, support, and permission to choose peace without abandoning purpose.

There’s a lot happening behind the scenes that no one really prepares you for. So let’s normalize it. šŸ‘¶šŸ½

In those first hours, you can expect:
• Skin-to-skin that helps regulate baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing
• Rooting, latching attempts, and short feeds (yes, that’s normal)
• That first thick, dark p**p (meconium), exactly what we want to see
• A settling period where bonding and confidence begin to grow

Nothing about this needs to be perfect.
It just needs to be supported.

If you want a calm, informed, and supported first day with your baby, my Newborn Course walks you through what to expect step-by-step so you’re not guessing in the moment.

This week, I’ve received so many calls and messages about cold and flu symptoms circulating right now.

So when our youngest started showing symptoms this morning, I did what I often recommend to families… I reached for a home Flu A/B test.

At-home testing can be a helpful first step. It gives you quick information, helps guide next steps, and can bring a little clarity when you’re trying to decide whether to monitor at home, call your pediatrician, or keep siblings separated.

A few reminders:
• Not every fever or cough is the flu
• Test results are one piece of the picture, not the whole story
• Trust your instincts and reach out if something feels off

You don’t have to panic, but you do want to stay informed.

Cold and flu season can feel overwhelming, especially when little ones are involved. You’re not overreacting… you’re being attentive. And that matters.

If you want more guidance on what to watch for, when to test, and when to seek care, I’ll keep sharing practical tips to help you navigate this season with confidence. Follow Dr. Jalan Burton, MD, MPH

Purees have their place… but babies need chunks too šŸ‘¶šŸ½šŸŒ

Here’s why texture matters for speech development šŸ‘‡šŸ½

When babies only eat smooth purees for too long, they miss out on important oral-motor practice. Chewing soft chunks helps strengthen the same muscles used for speech… the tongue, lips, jaw, and cheeks.

Introducing age-appropriate textures helps children:
✨ Learn how to move food side to side in the mouth
✨ Develop jaw strength and coordination
✨ Improve tongue control
✨ Build the foundation for clear speech sounds

Chewing isn’t just about eating… it’s about learning how the mouth works.

That doesn’t mean skipping purees entirely. It means progressing textures safely as your child is ready. Mashed foods, soft chunks, finger foods… all of it matters.

If you’re worried about picky eating, gagging, or delayed speech, this is one of those small shifts that can make a big difference.

Save this for later and share it with a parent who needs this reminder šŸ’›

For years, I measured success by productivity... by how many patients I saw, how many boxes I checked, how much I could juggle. šŸ˜ž

But that version of ā€œsuccessā€ came at a cost.

Now, my definition has changed. I no longer measure success by how much I do, but by how aligned I feel while doing it. 🄰

That alignment, the place where your purpose, peace, and practice meet, is what I call harmony.

If you’re a woman in healthcare or wellness who’s ready to stop chasing balance and start building harmony in your life and career, my new course, Finding Harmony in Practice, was created for you.

Let’s redefine what success looks and feels like — together. šŸ«¶šŸ¾

Some mornings just feel full-circle šŸ«¶šŸ¾

Here I am with my forever intern, Maxine, who is now a medical student. Watching her grow from shadowing and learning in our practice to stepping into her own calling has been one of the sweetest parts of my career.

I was honored to write one of her med school letters of recommendation… and now I get to cheer her on as she becomes the kind of physician our communities deserve.

If you ever needed a reminder that pouring into the next generation matters, let this be it. Mentorship is legacy. 🧔

As parents, we put so much pressure on ourselves to ā€œget it right.ā€
The perfect routines… the perfect meals… the perfect responses… the perfect balance.

But what our children actually remember — and what shapes who they become — is how we live in front of them.

They learn wellness by watching us rest without guilt.
They learn emotional regulation by watching us pause and breathe.
They learn balance when they see us honor our limits instead of pushing past them.
They learn compassion when we show it to ourselves first.

You don’t have to be a perfect parent to raise healthy humans.
You just have to be a present one.

Small moments of connection, consistency, and care are far more powerful than any idea of perfection. And every time you choose presence, you’re modeling a version of wellness your children will carry into adulthood.

You’re doing better than you think.
And your children feel it more than they’ll ever be able to say.

So many of us were raised to believe we had to choose…
purpose or peace, ambition or rest, impact or alignment.

But as I’ve walked through my own journey — motherhood, medicine, burnout, rebuilding, and rediscovering who I am beyond my roles — I’ve learned something powerful:

You don’t have to choose.
You can have both.

Peace doesn’t diminish your purpose.
And your purpose doesn’t have to cost you your wellbeing.

When we learn to listen to our bodies, honor our capacity, and build systems that support the life we’re trying to create… everything shifts. You start showing up with clarity. You create from a place of overflow, not depletion. You lead with intention rather than survival.

And that’s exactly why I created something new for the women who feel this tug just as deeply as I do.

Finding Harmony in Practice is a strategic, empowering course curated specifically for women in healthcare and wellness who are seeking more balance with impact.

Created from my own experiences of burnout, rebuilding, and rediscovering purpose, this course combines expert-led lessons with practical tools to help you launch, grow, or elevate your business, on your own terms.

Whether you’re a clinician ready to step into entrepreneurship or a wellness professional looking for sustainable growth, this program will help you find alignment between your calling and your capacity. 🌿
