If you’re planning on sending your little one back to school in August/September, help ease the transition while protecting them, their teachers, & friends by following these tips:
β€’
😷 build up their tolerance for wearing a mask for long periods of time. Start by having them wear one for 5 minutes, then take a break and increase to 6, then 10... 20... & so on.
β€’
😷 ask your child’s teacher or building staff if they can share pictures of themselves wearing masks/face shields/etc. Begin sharing these pictures with your kiddo, so they can become desensitized to seeing these familiar people look a little different
β€’
😷 children may get excited to see their friends again (reasonably so!). Practice a few different ways of expressing the excitement & greeting without giving hugs. Try elbow bumps, foot bumps, & air hugs! πŸ‘ŠπŸΌπŸ€ŸπŸΎπŸ‘‹πŸ½
β€’
😷 ask your school what their plans are to incorporate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into the curriculum. Your child has been through something traumatic, and now will be going back to a familiar place in an unfamiliar way. It’s important that this is talked about!

✨If you can read this, you must be a speech-language pathologist✨
β€’
Speech Therapists use something called β€œIPA” [international phonetic alphabet] to decode spoken language and understand a clients speech more accurately. IPA includes more sounds than the English alphabet [English has 26 letters, or symbols, and IPA has 107!] 🀯

Clap your hands πŸ‘πŸΌ , stomp your feet πŸ‘ž, Pat your legs... teaching your little one they can use their own body to create sound is an EXCELLENT precursor to vocalizing sounds and words πŸ‘„!
β€’
⭐️ BONUS ⭐️ have the sounds mimic a conversation by taking turns non-verbally. (First you clap, then your kiddo claps, then you clap twice, etc)!

You & your little one can make your very own play-doh with this easy recipe! 🀩
β€’
There are ENDLESS ways to use play-doh to elicit language. Practice sequencing the steps of a recipe πŸ—’, following directions to make different shapes & figures, identifying colors 🎨 , requesting β€œmore,” or using a smash mat to work on articulation πŸ‘„!
β€’
THE RECIPEπŸ₯:
❀️ pour 2cups of flour into a large bowl
🧑 add 1/4cup of salt πŸ§‚to the flower
πŸ’› put 3/4cup water in a smaller *microwave safe* bowl
πŸ’š microwave water til hot, about 30-60sec⏰
πŸ’™ add 1tbsp oil to the hot water
πŸ’œ add desired food coloring to oil/water & mix
πŸ’— add water mixture into the flour bowl & mix it all together!
β€’
⭐️HELPFUL HINTS:
*If the play doh mixture is too sticky, add flour
*If the mixture is too dry, slowly add hot water
*If you don’t have food coloring, kool-aid powder works great too!

Simply put, core words are the words that make up the majority of everything we say! Speech therapists often begin by teaching β€œcore words” when working on expressive language, since these words are so valuable. They allow us to communicate the widest variety of ideas, using the fewest words🀯!
β€’
Take β€œMORE” for example. Teaching the word MORE is extremely powerful because that 1 word alone gives your little one access to an endless amount of things they want or need! JuiceπŸ§ƒ, cookiesπŸͺ, ticklesπŸ€—, bubbles🧼, music🎢 ... can all be obtained by using the word MORE, instead of using each individual nounπŸ˜€.
β€’
As the saying goes... CORE is the glue that holds the FRINGE together! πŸ’ž
