If youβre planning on sending your little one back to school in August/September, help ease the transition while protecting them, their teachers, & friends by following these tips:
β’
π· build up their tolerance for wearing a mask for long periods of time. Start by having them wear one for 5 minutes, then take a break and increase to 6, then 10... 20... & so on.
β’
π· ask your childβs teacher or building staff if they can share pictures of themselves wearing masks/face shields/etc. Begin sharing these pictures with your kiddo, so they can become desensitized to seeing these familiar people look a little different
β’
π· children may get excited to see their friends again (reasonably so!). Practice a few different ways of expressing the excitement & greeting without giving hugs. Try elbow bumps, foot bumps, & air hugs! ππΌπ€πΎππ½
β’
π· ask your school what their plans are to incorporate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into the curriculum. Your child has been through something traumatic, and now will be going back to a familiar place in an unfamiliar way. Itβs important that this is talked about!
