Orthopedic Care: Summer Update

As Dr. Eric Olson prepares to lay down his scalpel for the final time, Waterbury Hospital proudly honors his distinguished career and the countless lives he has touched over the past three decades. Since joining Waterbury HEALTH and Waterbury Orthopedic Associates in 1995, Dr. Olson has been a cornerstone of orthopedics, blending surgical innovation with compassionate, patient-centered care. Dr. Olson brought many new orthopedic techniques to the Greater Waterbury region, including his introduction of arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, in 1999, and reverse total shoulder replacement surgeries in 2009. Both procedures enhanced patients’ outcomes and function through skillful application of new technologies. Beyond his surgical prowess, Dr. Olson is celebrated for fostering a culture of safety and teamwork within his team. Drawing from his experience as a pilot, he implements protocols to empower every member to voice concerns, ensuring optimal patient care. Yet, Dr. Olson’s impact transcends the operating room.

Dr. Olson’s patient-centric approach to medicine emphasizes transparency and shared decision-making to ensure treatment aligns with his patients’ needs and values. A notable success story is that of Bill Horrigan, a retired pilot who, after shoulder surgery performed by Dr. Olson, regained full mobility and returned to his passion for flying. Bill credits Dr. Olson with reclaiming his life. Bill's story is featured in a video on our Waterbury HEALTH Orthopedics page.

As he transitions into retirement, Dr. Olson plans to collaborate with his wife, Beatriz, an endocrinologist and pioneer in Integrative Medicine and founder of LOTUS, the Educational Center for Integrative Healing and Wellness. Together, they aim to offer consulting services that blend conventional medicine with integrative approaches, addressing mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of health. Dr. Olson’s enduring impact on the Waterbury community is immeasurable. He has been a mentor, pioneer, and above all, a compassionate physician to generations of patients in the Greater Waterbury community. We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Olson for his unwavering dedication and the indelible mark he leaves on our community!
