Last Wednesday we asked what is the phenomenon shown on this slide. The answer is platelet clumping which often results in a pseudothrombocytopenia. Platelet clumping can occur as a result of poor collection technique during the venipuncture and certain disease states, but is more commonly induced by the lavender top tube anticoagulant – EDTA. There are several different strategies to collecting a patient that produces platelet clumps, such as using a sodium citrate tube, an EDTA-tube with Amikacin, or even a bedside fingerstick to be counted manually on a hemocytometer.
