We heard mentioned in Orbiter by Noah Kahan and had to show you our own slice of this city.

Watertown is home to Perkins where we support 200 kids and young adults with disabilities on our campus, 2,000 across Massachusetts, and 2 million more around the world.

Video description: Text: This is Watertown. Montage of clips of Perkins campus flash across the screen, including drone views from our tower, students and teachers working and learning together in our classrooms, kids playing volleyball, biking, on the playground, at graduation. A collection of still images move and roll together of similar scenes as an animated collage to end the video.

How do blind people experience emojis? 🤔 Our friends at Perkins Library and Blind New World helped us find out!

Screen reader software allows and users to hear emojis by announcing short descriptors like “thinking face” or “red heart.” 🔊

While this technology is great for inclusivity, visual content doesn’t always translate perfectly to audio. Make sure your usage prioritizes so everyone gets the message! ❤️

In Adapted classes at Perkins, students with disabilities are exposed to a variety of sports and athletics.

Today Kelsey takes us through our adaptive station, where students can practice leaning side to side on a mat, eventually making their way to the balance beam.

Does have punctuation and symbols? 🤔 We asked our friends at Perkins Library for the answer.

Absolutely! Braille contains the same punctuation marks as are found in print. 📚

But, some combinations of dots have different meanings depending on their placement. For example, the same combination of dots can represent an opening quotation mark when at the start of a word/sentence or a question mark when placed at the end of a word/sentence.

Blast from the past 🚀

We recently got a visit from Judi, a retired Perkins employee and alumni from the class of 1970! Judi donated her to our Lower School, passing along a piece of Perkins history that will now also be used in today’s classrooms. 💙

Braille embossers transform written text into for menus, lesson plans, and other everyday materials.

After the embosser prints the pages, Beth, our Braille Production Manager at Perkins Library shows us the next step: running them through a paper cutter. This trims the pages to size and removes the sprockets before they head to their final destination.

A braille is a tool used to write by hand. The slate holds the paper in place and has guides for each braille cell, while the stylus is used to press dots into the page.

Unlike a where you write left to right, a slate and stylus requires writing each braille letter as its mirror image and from right to left. This is because the dots are embossed from the back of the paper. When the page is flipped over, the dots are raised and can be read from left to right.
