March 30th is National Doctor Day!

I would like to take a moment to show my appreciation for the hard work and dedication of my fellow colleagues. They show compassion on behalf of patients, colleagues, and communities. It's important to recognize the countless and continued hours of learning, sacrifice of time away from family, holidays missed, and the pressure on physicians to make difficult decisions in saving lives and improving the quality of life for patients.

As Carl Jung once said, "Medicine cures diseases, but only doctors can cure patients." National Doctor Day was first observed on March 30, 1933.

On this past International Women's Day, I want to take a moment to honor the incredible female mentors who have inspired me both in medicine and as a working mom. My mother, a single working mom, sacrificed to prioritize my education. As a young doctor leaving fellowship with five children at the time, I was told I was not hirable. But years later, now with eight children, I continue my long and fulfilling career as a cardiologist. To all the women remember that it is possible to love and have both your career and your family.
Dream big and don't let anyone tell you that you can't have it all. Thank you to those who have helped me overcome the challenges of being in a field that has been predominantly male. Let's continue to support and empower each other.
