Today is a heavy day. The House has passed Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill”, a nearly 900-page monstrosity that slashes Medicaid and food assistance for millions of low-income families. All that’s left is for Trump to sign it into law, likely with a grin on his orange-tinged face, and a pen dipped in cruelty.
This isn’t just politics to me. I’ve worked directly with Medicaid members as an RN Case Manager. I’ve seen how these programs uplift lives; offering dignity, stability, and a path forward when everything else feels uncertain. These aren’t abstract “budget items.” They are people. Parents caring for children with complex medical needs. Elderly patients deciding between groceries and prescriptions. Pregnant women relying on coverage to access prenatal care, safe deliveries, and postpartum support. I’ve seen their stories, and I carry them with me.
But in the darkness, there are still beacons of light. Hakeem Jeffries stood on the House floor for 8 hours and 45 minutes, breaking the record for the longest speech in House history. He read the stories of real people; those who will be hurt by this bill, and refused to let their voices be silenced. I’ve had the honor of meeting this man. He is a hero. Full stop.
I’m proud to be on the right (and yes, I mean correct) side of history. I care about people. About their health. Their safety. Their dignity. Their freedom. And while this bill may pass, it will never define who we are or what we fight for.
I’ll sleep tonight knowing I stood for compassion. For justice. For humanity.❤️
