What is disordered eating?
Disordered eating refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that may not qualify as a full-blown eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia but can still negatively impact physical and mental health. It includes behaviors such as chronic dieting, binge eating, skipping meals, excessive calorie counting, or having an unhealthy relationship with food and body image.
Effects on Overall Health:
Disordered eating can lead to various health problems, including:
• Physical Effects: Nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, weakened immune function, hormonal imbalances, and increased risk of conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease.
• Mental and Emotional Effects: Anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and an obsessive focus on food and weight that can interfere with daily life.
Who Is More Likely to Experience It?
Anyone can develop disordered eating habits, but certain groups may be at a higher risk:
• Teens and Young Adults: Particularly those under societal pressure to look a certain way.
• Athletes: Especially in sports that emphasize weight, appearance, or performance (e.g., gymnastics, wrestling, ballet).
• People with a History of Dieting: Chronic dieters may develop unhealthy eating patterns.
• Those with High Stress or Mental Health Issues: Anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can contribute to disordered eating behaviors.
• Individuals Influenced by Social Media: Exposure to unrealistic body standards online can lead to unhealthy eating habits.
