One essential part of self-compassion is common humanity — the understanding that struggle, uncertainty, and growth are shared human experiences, not personal failures.

On days that invite service and contribution, we’re reminded that showing up for others can also soften our own sense of isolation. Acts of service help us feel connected, grounded, and part of something larger, which can ease feelings of anxiety and depression.

At Oak Counseling, we believe that caring for others and caring for ourselves are deeply connected.

What’s one small way you could connect or contribute this week — in a way that also feels kind to you?

We love us a good Galentine’s Event! Registration is now open!

🧠✨ Thinking about neuropsychological testing for your child? ✨🧠

Many parents reach out to us after months (or years) of wondering:
“Is this just a phase?”
“Why does school feel so much harder than it should?”
“How can we better understand what our child needs?”

At Oak Counseling & Consulting, we’re grateful to offer pediatric neuropsychological evaluations with Dr. Baniewicz, our pediatric neuropsychologist. These comprehensive evaluations are designed to help families better understand how a child thinks, learns, and processes the world — and to turn questions into clarity.

Neuropsychological testing can help explore concerns related to:
✔️ Attention and focus
✔️ Learning differences
✔️ Executive functioning
✔️ Emotional and behavioral regulation
✔️ Social and developmental concerns
✔️ Academic strengths and challenges

More than just testing, this process helps families and schools make informed, supportive decisions — with clear recommendations tailored to your child.

If you’ve been wondering whether testing might be helpful, you don’t have to have all the answers yet. We’re happy to talk through questions and help you decide next steps.

We’ve been quieter here — and that was intentional.

The weeks between Thanksgiving and the New Year can ask a lot from us, and here at Oak, it meant putting our energy where it was most needed and shifting things around on our bandwidths.

If your bandwidth has been thin lately too, you’re not alone. 🌿

As we return, we’re holding the same value we encourage for our clients:
👉 honoring limits
👉 choosing presence over performance
👉 and letting “enough” be enough

We’re easing back in, grounded and grateful. Happy 2026!

❤️

As we move into Thanksgiving, I want to remind you that gratitude is more than a feeling — it’s a powerful tool for mental health. Research shows that practicing gratitude can help regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety and depression, and gently rewire the brain toward resilience and hope.

Gratitude doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It simply invites us to notice what is steady, supportive, or meaningful — even in the midst of hard seasons. Sometimes that gratitude is for people. Sometimes it’s for small moments. Sometimes it’s just for getting through the day.

From all of us at Oak Counseling & Consulting, we’re deeply grateful for our clients, our community, and the trust you place in us. Wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with gentleness, connection, and whatever kind of gratitude feels true for you. 🤍

💙 Today is National Children’s Grief Awareness Day 💙
When a child experiences loss, their grief grows with them.

Children experience grief differently than adults. Their feelings tend to come in waves, not all at once. Many kids seem “okay” at first, only for their grief to surface weeks, months, or even years later. This is incredibly common and is known as delayed grief.

Children can only process what their brain and body are ready to handle in the moment. As they grow and their understanding deepens, new layers of the loss resurface. This isn’t regression — it’s development.

Signs of delayed grief might look like:
• new fears
• big emotions
• questions about the loss
• changes in behavior
• sadness that feels sudden
• regression or increased clinginess

These behaviors aren’t defiance or “acting out.” They’re communication.

🌿 How to support a grieving child:
• Make room for questions (even repeated ones)
• Normalize all feelings — the quiet and the big
• Keep routines consistent
• Check in regularly, not just right after the loss
• Let them know they’re not alone, and their feelings matter

Grief doesn’t disappear for children — it evolves as they grow. Your steady presence helps them make sense of what they’re carrying.

💙 Today, we hold space for every child who is grieving — loudly, quietly, or somewhere in between — and for the caregivers supporting them. 🌿

If you or someone you know is seeking support, there are wonderful resources in our community:

Local Grief Support Resources (Chester County, PA):
🌿 A Haven (Exton, PA)
Free grief support groups for children, teens, and young adults.
Website: ahaven.org

🌿 GriefShare (Multiple Locations)
Community grief support groups for adults and families.
Find a group: find.griefshare.org

And of course, Oak Counseling & Consulting is here to support children and families navigating grief with compassion and care.

Please feel free to share this post so grieving families know they’re not alone. 💛

💙 Tomorrow is National Children’s Grief Awareness Day.

In honor of that, Patty and I wanted to share a little about our recent visit to A Haven- .chesterco — an incredible Chester County nonprofit dedicated to supporting grieving children and their families with compassion, creativity, and unwavering presence.

Walking through their space, you can feel the care that goes into every detail. The rooms are warm and intentional, the programming is thoughtful, and the entire environment communicates one message: You’re not alone.

Children’s grief is often misunderstood or minimized, and places like A Haven make such a difference by giving kids and their grownups a safe, steady space to process their feelings at their own pace. Their work truly matters — and if you’re looking for a meaningful way to support families in our community, I’d encourage you to check out their mission, learn about their programs, or consider supporting them in any way that feels right. 💛

Tomorrow, we’ll be sharing more about how children experience grief and what helps them heal.

For today, we’re simply grateful for organizations like A Haven and the heart they bring to this important work. 🌿

✨ Thank you for such a beautiful Branches of Motherhood gathering! ✨

I’m still smiling from Monday night’s meeting — the laughs, the honesty, the shared stories, and the feeling of real community in the "room". It’s such a gift to watch moms show up for themselves and for each other in this way. I’m so grateful to everyone who came and helped create that warm, supportive energy. 🫶

If you haven’t joined us yet, Branches of Motherhood is a free peer-to-peer support group open to moms in every stage of the journey. Whether you're navigating newborn fog, toddler chaos, school-age worries, teen emotions, or the wide in-between, there’s always a place for you here.

Our next meeting is Monday, December 15th at 6:30 PM, and we’d love to have you. With the busyness of the season, this next gathering will be light, cozy, and focused on keeping calm during the holiday swirl. 🍃✨
