I did a bit of traveling the past few days, and one of the things I enjoy doing when I'm in the car by myself is listening to audiobooks (I know, I'm such a nerd!). I was listening to Rachel Hollis's latest book, What If YOU Are the Answer: And 26 Other Questions That Just Might Change Your Life, and she told a story about when she was on a Girl Scout trip and had started her period. She only had a few months of periods under her belt (pardon the pun), and she was experiencing some new symptoms that she didn't understand. These symptoms went on for YEARS before she finally knew what they were (menstrual cramps felt in the v***a).

I share this because she, like so many of us, spent years in the dark about her menstrual cycle. This is why Luna Wellness exists, and why we offer menstrual health education to girls and women of all ages. If like Rachel, me, and so many other women, you still don't feel fully knowledgeable about your cycle, please click the link below to sign up for the self-paced Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle course. It's an excellent intro to the incredible things our bodies do and how to partner with it, rather than work against it.

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle Downloadable Course $29.99 This self-paced course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of external and internal female anatomy, the menstrual cycle, and how they interact. The course is designed for those who are interested....

PMDD is often confused with PMS, with people often assuming they are the same thing. They are most definitely NOT the same, and it's important to understand this so that the severity of PMDD can be fully understood. It's pretty common for women to experience symptoms of PMS -- the typical cramping, moodiness, maybe crying at Hallmark commercials type stuff. PMDD, on the other hand, can severely impact all aspects of life in a truly negative way.

"The consequences are life-altering – relationships break down, careers are lost, and many sufferers find themselves in crisis every single month. Studies show that up to 82% of those with PMDD experience suicidal thoughts, and 26% have attempted to end their life. Despite this, PMDD is often dismissed as “just bad PMS,” leaving those affected to suffer in silence."

PMDD is unique in that symptoms are not ongoing; they only appear during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle -- the 1-2 weeks prior to the start of your period. These symptoms can be debilitating and interfere with personal and professional relationships and activities.

April is PMDD Awareness Month. During the next few weeks, I will be sharing PMDD-focused content to share my journey with this invisible illness. The goal is to raise awareness, educate, and end the stigma that is associated with PMDD.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a cyclical, hormone-based mood disorder with symptoms arising during the premenstrual and luteal phase (1-2 weeks before the period phase), and subsiding after menstruation begins. It is believed to affect 5.5% of women of reproductive age. Those with PMDD are at a significantly increased for su***de and self-harm.

PMDD is a severe and negative reaction in the brain to the natural rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone.

I look forward to sharing my journey with you. As we go forward, if you find that you identify with any of the content posted, and you think you might have PMDD, please reach out to me so we can talk it through together.
