*Sound On*.🎶 Could I jump higher & squat lower? Of course. But it’s not about what you can do...it’s about what you can do WELL through the whole set. I want to make sure I’m decelerating the movement well, that my knees aren’t caving in or bowing out, that I’m not forcing more dorsiflexion (ankle range) than I have available, and that I’m landing softly & with stability on each rep. Look for these things next time you’re jumping away & your joints will start to thank you.💪🏽
Face mask for the full effect.😆🙄

Checking in 👋🏽. How’s everyone doing? I’m doing well...trying to be really intentional about not only boosting my physical immune system but my emotional one, too. ☀️
☀️☀️☀️☀️
There are so many health benefits associated with the outdoors, sunshine, nature, exercise, grounding, no electronics, music, fresh air, water, journaling, and prayer/meditation. Now more than ever...as we’re constantly bombarded with all things fear-inducing...we need to be mindfully focusing on healthy mindsets and de-stressing. Stress causes high-cortisol and inflammation levels which decrease the immune system, so keep decompressing, y’all👇🏽.
☀️☀️☀️☀️
1) Obviously exercise is HUGE for both the physical & mental aspects. Start a daily routine (all experts are suggesting daily routines right now) of walking, jogging, outdoor workouts (or indoor), etc. More on this one later...we all know the benefits are insane!
2) Get out in the sunshine. I can’t stress this enough. Vitamin D is a crucial ingredient for overall health; protects against inflammation, lowers high blood pressure, helps muscles, improves brain function & may even protect against some cancers. Sun exposure also has a huge impact on depression/mood, seasonal affective disorder and sleep quality.
3) Grounding. Do things that ‘ground’ you back to the earth, like walking barefoot in the grass or sand. You can also lie down in the grass/sand to ground your full body (and do it in the sunshine for extra benefits!). You can also dip your bare feet (or swim) in water...such as a clear lake or the ocean.
4) Prayer/Meditation have many health benefits contributing to a calmer state of mind, more positivity, better sleep, lower stress levels/anxiety, lower blood pressure, etc. More on this one later too.
☀️☀️☀️☀️
I could list the benefits of music, no electronics, journaling, etc. too...but you’re seeing the pattern here. These are all amazing ways to take care of your mental state right now, as well as your physical body. At a time when things are so uncertain, let’s not only be kind to one another, but to ourselves. Love y’all, I’m truly praying for you, & I’m in this with you.❤️

is the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body & plays important roles in the of your body & brain. Here are 10 evidence-based health benefits of magnesium:

1) Acts as a cofactor or "helper molecule" in the biochemical reactions of the body including:
* Energy creation
* Protein formation
* Gene maintenance (repairs DNA)
* Muscle movements
* Nervous system regulation

2) It may boost performance 👉🏽 During exercise, you may need 10–20% more magnesium than when you're resting, depending on the activity.
Magnesium helps move blood sugar into your muscles and dispose of lactate, which can build up in muscles during exercise and cause pain.

3) Magnesium fights 👉🏽 Magnesium plays a critical role in brain function & mood, and low levels are linked to an increased risk of depression. One analysis in over 8,800 people found that people under the age of 65 with the lowest magnesium intake had a 22% greater risk of depression.

4) Benefits against Type II 👉🏽 Studies suggest that about 48% of people with type 2 diabetes have low levels of magnesium in their blood. This can impair insulin's ability to keep blood sugar levels under control.

5) Magnesium can lower blood pressure 👉🏽 In one study, people who took 450 mg per day experienced a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

6) Anti-Inflammatory Benefits 👉🏽 Low magnesium intake is linked to chronic , which is one of the drivers of aging, obesity and chronic .

7) Help prevent 👉🏽 Some researchers believe that people who suffer from migraines are more likely than others to be magnesium deficient. In fact, a few encouraging studies suggest that magnesium can prevent and even help treat migraines.

😎 Reduce resistance 👉🏽 One study found that supplementing with this mineral reduced insulin resistance and blood sugar levels

9) Improves symptoms 👉🏽 Interestingly, magnesium has been shown to improve mood, reduce water retention and other symptoms in women with PMS.

10) It’s safe & widely available 👉🏽 The recommended daily intake is 400–420 mg per day for men & 310–320 mg per day for women.

⚡️Who wants a better bum?! 🙋🏽‍♀️ And whatcha know about a 1-leg standing hip extension? It’s a great exercise for the & hamstrings that’s less stressful on your spine than a ‘dead lift’ with both legs planted, but also works the opposite side gluteus medius (side glute/hip) to stabilize isometrically while the other side moves. Your erector spinae (group of muscles that run up your low back) are working to keep your spine in extension throughout the movement, too. It’s also working on balance & forcing the lower leg stabilizers (posterior tibialis, peroneus longus, etc) to work Isometrically to keep your foot planted in neutral while the body is moving. I’d say that’s a great bang for your buck in one exercise!
👉🏽 Trainer Tip: Try to keep a neutral spine (slight, natural arch with no fiexion/forward bend) & hips EVEN throughout the entire movement, weight in heel, and slight bend in active knee. Squeeze glute as you extend up to a standing position each time. Enjoy your workout!

Throwback to when he was playing for the . Not only was I training him & doing MAT to correct imbalances/injuries & prevent them, but was also teaching him about training smarter instead of harder. Most movements he was doing were using significantly less weight than he was used to lifting with the team, but required far more exertion & stability than he was used to. This was the result.🤷🏽‍♀️

: One of the great compound exercises involving multiple muscles, with the primary movers being the quads, glutes, and hamstrings (and erector spinae A’s stabilizers). Here are 3 good tips to remember when squatting to increase effectiveness & decrease risk on the joints:
• • • • •
1) Maintain the natural arch/position of the low back throughout the squat to decrease disc/spinal compression, especially if using weight/load. You can play around with this more when loads are light or body weight and/or if no low back problems/imbalances are present, but as a general rule of thumb it’s best to maintain a neutral spine when squatting.
• • • • •
2) Make sure the tracking/movement of your patella (knee cap) is lined up over the first two toes as you squat down. If not, adjust your foot position out or in so they’re in line.
• • • • •
3) Generally speaking, it’s good to not let the knees move way out/past the toes in order to decrease stress on the knee joint...especially when loaded (using weight). Thinking about sitting back in the heels helps transfer the weight correctly. Again, there’s always exceptions & more freedom in movement when we’re using just our body weight (and depending on the goal), but practicing these tips regularly...especially when loading squats, can help decrease uneven wear/tear & stress on the joints. Happy squatting! 😄

💪🏽...
So, can I challenge you on a few things?
1) You don’t always have to be in a gym to work out or do resistance training. The outdoors, nature, & sunshine can contribute the health benefits. Get creative in your surroundings! ☀️
2) SLOW YOUR MOVEMENTS DOWN. Especially if you’ve got a bunch of weight in your hand. Without boring you & nerding out, inertia, force, momentum, & speed change A LOT during an exercise...including the risks. You don’t have to be going 90 miles an hour or doing ‘timed workouts’ to be effective. Try using CONTROL in your movements, holding positions without motion (isometrics), decelerating slowly against gravity, keeping tension on the muscle, keeping form & stability through the motion, and actively recruiting the muscle you’re using (and your brain’s control of it) instead of just flailing around to burn calories.
👉🏽 The random side shuffle I do at the end is to elevate my heartrate between sets/intervals. 🤸🏽‍♀️

The scary truth about what's hurting our kids

"Dr. Twenge started doing research 25 years ago on generational differences, but when 2011 -2012 hit, she saw something that would scare her to the core. This is the year when those having iPhones went over the 50% mark. This was the year that more kids started to say that they felt “sad, hopeless, useless… that they couldn’t do anything right (depression).”

Dr. Twenge started doing research 25 years ago on generational differences, but when 2011 -2012 hit, she saw something that would scared her to the core.
