Honor Your Mother

Okay mom, this one’s for you. This Sunday is Mother’s Day and it always reminds me to let my mom know just how much she’s meant to me over the years. It’s not like I need an excuse; but, it’s fun to have a day to celebrate our moms!

So, I’m going to Take 5 and share with you some ways I’ve tried to honor my mom.

1. Do Your Best – Frankly, there’s not many things that bring my mom more pleasure than seeing her kids to well. So, over the years I’ve tried; but not always succeeded, to do my best. Because, when I do, I know my mom’s heart smiles.
2. Be There – When we first come into this world, our moms are there 24/7. Today, it’s time to reverse the roles. I’ve made it clear to my mom that I will be there for her whenever she needs me.
3. Say Thank You – It never gets old hearing you’re appreciated. I tell my mom often how much she means to me and how much I appreciate all she’s done for me.
4. Spend Quality Time With Mom – I’ve learned I have to be intentional about setting time aside to be with my mom. This is her time; and, I don’t want to be distracted. I want my mom to know she’s all that matters to me when I’m intentional about my time with her.
5. Help Carry Her Legacy – I’m working hard to embrace and continue the values my mom has instilled in me. Whether it's kindness, hard work, or a special tradition, living out her values is a powerful way to pay tribute to my mom.

To the world my mom is a mother; but, to me and my family, she’s the world. Happy Mother’s Day!

Life Is A Highway!

If life is a highway, is it about the journey or the destination? All I know is, where we begin has no bearing on where we end. This is a powerful sentiment and it speaks to the idea that your starting point doesn’t define your potential or your end result.

So, let’s Take 5 and think about some ways we can make life’s journey more interesting; and, more likely to get you where you want to go.

1. Say “Yes” More Often – If you haven’t seen it already, watch the movie Yes Day. It’s a favorite at my house and it will give you an idea for how saying “Yes!” can make life more spontaneous, random and fun!
2. Pursue A Passion Project – Whether it's writing a book, training a new puppy, learning an instrument, or building a garden – having something that fuels your soul will add depth to your day.
3. Connect Deeply With Others – Surround yourself with curious, kind, passionate people. Seek out real conversations by asking interesting questions; and, build friendships that will grow with you.
4. Travel With Purpose – Whether you’re traveling for work or pleasure, make a point to really be in this new place. Take a few minutes to learn local traditions, or just wander the new place where you find yourself with intention. Recently, I was in El Paso for a convention and was intentional about taking in some of the city’s history and cuisine. This made my business trip fun and interesting.
5. Collect Stories, Not Stuff – Chase moments that make great stories – find things that make you laugh, cry, or go “I can't believe that just happened.” Journal these stories and share and cherish them.

Tom Cochrane had it right when he wrote the song; “Life Is A Highway”; and, I know I’m going to ride it all night long.

Kindness Is Contagious!

Kindness is about being gentle, caring, and willing to help others without expecting anything in return. I’ve learned I have to put aside my ego and greed if I’m going to be genuinely kind to others. For most of us, this doesn’t come naturally and requires us to remain conscious of the vibe we’re putting out.

So, let’s Take 5 and consider some easy ways we can be kind to others.

1. Offer A Genuine Compliment – Tell someone something you really like about them – it could be their smile, their work, their outfit; or, how they make others feel.
2. Listen Actively – Sometimes, the kindest thing I can do is simply listen without interrupting or judging. If someone needs to talk, I do my best to give them my full attention.
3. Perform Random Acts Of Kindness – Hold the door open for someone, pay for a strangers cup of coffee; or, leave a kind note for a stranger. Small gestures like these can have a BIG impact.
4. Practice Patience – Be extra patient with people who are struggling – whether it’s a slow cashier, a coworker having a rough day; or, a friend who just needs a little extra support.
5. Be Kind To Yourself – I’ve found it’s really difficult to be kind to others if I’m not giving myself a little grace. I’ve learned that sometimes I need to forgive myself or take some time to do some things that recharge my batteries and make me feel good.

But honestly, you don’t have to be kind just because people say so. It’s more meaningful when it comes from you — when it aligns with who you want to be and the world you want to create.

Patience Pays
One of my favorite authors of children’s books is Mo Willems. He’s written 25 books with Piggie and Gerald as his main characters; and, his books always focus on a good life lesson. His book about patience is titled, Waiting Is Not Easy. I highly recommend his books if you have kids.
We all know patience is a powerful virtue that brings numerous benefits to our lives. So, let’s Take 5 and consider what I believe are some of the best reasons to be patient:
1. Better Decision-Making – When I’m patient, I take time to think things through instead of reacting impulsively. I like to use the “24-Hour Rule” anytime I’m making a really important decision. This helps me make smarter and more thoughtful decisions.
2. Reduced Stress & Anxiety – Practicing patience helps me stay calm. We have a saying in our house; “Calm is the key.”; and, this reduces my anxiety and improves my mental well-being.
3. Stronger Relationships – Patience allows me to listen, understand, and empathize with others. By doing so, I build more meaningful relationships with my family, friends, and colleagues.
4. Greater Success in Goals – Long-term success requires perseverance; and being patient, helps me stay committed to my goals, whether it's my career growth, fitness, or personal development.
5. Increased Happiness & Satisfaction – When I’m patient, I enjoy the process rather than just the outcome. This helps me to appreciate the small victories along the way.
As I mentioned earlier, waiting isn’t easy. It takes practice and the proper mindset. Joyce Meyer says; “Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.” That’s for sure and it’ ain’t easy.

Spring Cleaning

We just came off our Spring Break and I had promised my wife that while on break, we’d do a deep Spring Cleaning of our garage and basement. I was really worried I might have over committed and set myself up to under deliver. But, we woke up early, got after it and by the end of the day (after a trailer haul to the junkyard) our garage and basement looked twice as big and we felt awesome!

This got me thinking… So, let’s Take 5 and remind ourselves why a good Spring Cleaning is so important.

1. Less Stress & Anxiety – A clutter-free environment, eliminating your physical, mental, and digital clutter, reduces your sense of feeling overwhelmed, which in turn creates a sense of calm and order in your life.
2. More Focus & Productivity – With fewer distractions, it’s easier to concentrate on tasks and accomplish more in less time.
3. Time & Energy Savings – When you own less and keep things organized, you spend less time cleaning, searching for things and managing unnecessary stuff.
4. Better Mental Clarity – A simplified space leads to a clearer mind, making it easier to think creatively and make smart decisions.
5. Increased Happiness & Well-Being – Letting go of excess leads to a lighter, more intentional lifestyle, fostering greater self-satisfaction and peace.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting and decluttering—it’s about making space for new energy, fresh ideas, and a lighter spirit.

Dream On

Chasing your dreams is one of the most rewarding things you can do in life. So, let’s Take 5 and think about these reasons why you should go after them:

1. Personal Fulfillment – Pursuing your dreams brings a deep sense of joy and satisfaction. It allows you to live a life true to yourself rather than settling for something less.
2. Growth and Learning – The journey toward your dreams pushes you out of your comfort zone, helping you develop new skills, resilience, and confidence. Every challenge along the way becomes a lesson that makes you stronger.
3. Inspiration to Others – Following your dreams encourages those around you—friends, family, or even strangers—to pursue their own passions. You never know who you might inspire just by taking action.
4. No Regrets – One of the biggest regrets people have is not going after what they truly wanted. Taking a chance on your dreams means you won’t look back wondering, "If only I had…"
5. Creating Your Own Path – Instead of conforming to what society expects of you, chasing your dreams allows you to design a life that excites you. You take control of your destiny rather than letting life happen to you.

George Eliot said; “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” Don’t get stuck relishing your memories. Instead, charge headlong into your dreams and be the person you’ve always imagined you could be.

Own It

Have you ever worked with someone or been in a relationship with a person who always has an excuse for any and everything that goes wrong? Ugh, it’s exhausting! Owning up to our mistakes strengthens relationships and builds trust. Whether it’s in your personal or professional settings, people appreciate honesty and accountability, because it demonstrates your reliability and commitment to your own personal growth.

Taking ownership for our actions doesn’t come naturally. It’s definitely something I’ve had to work on over time. However, the more you do it, the more you realize it’s importance. Let’s Take 5 and remind ourselves of some of the benefits of being accountable to others.

1. Builds Trust and Credibility: People respect those who own up to their mistakes and take accountability. It strengthens relationships in both personal and professional life.
2. Leads To Personal Growth: Accepting responsibility helps you learn from mistakes, improve decision-making, and develop as a person. Growth comes from self-awareness and reflection.
3. Empowers You to Create Change: Blaming others keeps you stuck, but taking responsibility gives you control over your life. When you acknowledge your role in a mistake, you can make changes for the better.
4. Enhances Problem Solving Skills: Accountability pushes you to find solutions rather than making excuses. This mindset helps you overcome obstacles and handle challenges effectively.
5. Increases Self-Respect and Confidence: When you take responsibility, you develop a sense of integrity and confidence. You know you are in charge of your life, which boosts self-esteem.

Here’s what Jim Rohn said about taking ownership of your actions; “You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.” Taking responsibility for your actions and owning up to your mistakes is essential for personal growth and integrity.

Pawn Power

Have you ever watched a professional chess match? To win, you have to become a master of board control, strategic thinking, patient, and the ability to move with precision. And, the greatest chess players in the world love pawns because they pave the way for the more powerful pieces to be successful. Likewise, great followers become the first line of offense for leaders, teams and relationships to be successful.

This morning while walking with my wife, she inspired me to consider why followers are so important. The fact is, leaders can never be great until first they learn to be a great follower. So, let’s Take 5 and consider how we can be extremely supportive and recognize the importance of first being a phenomenal follower.

1. Be Proactive and Take The Initiative: Great followers don’t just wait for instructions – they anticipate others’ needs and act accordingly. Look for ways to contribute without being told what to do and take responsibility for your assigned tasks.
2. Communicate Effectively: Listen actively, ask questions for clarification, and provide honest feedback. Clear communication ensures alignment with your leader’s vision and helps prevent misunderstandings.
3. Stay Reliable and Accountable: Follow through on your commitments, meet deadlines, and always own up to your mistakes. Leaders depend on followers they can trust.
4. Demonstrate a Positive Attitude: Being adaptable, coachable, and open to feedback makes you an invaluable team player. A positive attitude fosters teamwork, which boosts morale and productivity.
5. Support The Leader’s Vision: A great follower understands and aligns with the leader’s goals while at the same time, feeling empowered to offer constructive suggestions. Support doesn’t mean blind obedience – it means working collaboratively with leadership and teammates toward success.

Aristotle said it best and I quote; “He who cannot be a good follower cannot be a good leader.” Today, there’s so much emphasis on being a good leader that many of us forget about the importance of first learning to be a good follower.

Listen Up!

Many communication experts rank listening as the most important skill for effective communication. In fact, it ranks higher than clarity of speech, nonverbal communication, empathy & emotional intelligence; and, confidence & persuasion. So, for a moment, let’s assume the communication experts have it right. Now, think back and recall every level of educational leadership training you’ve received over the years. It’s likely extensive. But, how many courses have you taken that taught you how to become a better listener? It’s likely none.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said it best when he penned; “The first service that one owes to others is the ministry of listening. And, the beginning of love for others is listening to them.” So, this morning, Let’s Take 5 and I’ll share with you some things I’ve learned which have helped me become a better listener.

1. Give Your Full Attention: Put your phone down and maintain eye contact with the other person to show you’re engaged. Use active body language, such as nodding and leaning in, to show attentiveness.
2. Practice Active Listening: Summarize and paraphrase what you just heard to confirm you understand what the other person is saying. I’ll say things like; “What I heard you say is…” This gives the other person the opportunity to acknowledge your understanding.
3. Don’t Interrupt: Let the other person finish their thoughts before sharing yours. Resist the urge to respond while the other person is speaking; and instead, focus on what they’re saying.
4. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of saying; “Did you have a good day today?” Try saying; “Tell me about your day?” I promise, this will get the conversation going.
5. Take Off Your Blinders: Listen without immediately forming opinions. Try to understand the other person’s perspective, even when you don’t agree with they’re saying.

If listening is the key to all other communication skills, then without it, the rest falls apart. Remember, being a good listener is one of the most valuable skills you can work on for improving communication and strengthening your relationships.
