🌬️ Cold Spells in Florida: Keeping Your Baby Safe & Warm 🍼
From Your Friends at Florida Pediatric Group

Even in the Sunshine State, we occasionally get chilly weather! 🧤 As temperatures dip, it’s important to take a few simple steps to protect your baby from the cold:

👶 Dress in Layers: Babies lose heat faster than adults. Dress your little one in one more layer than you’re wearing. A cozy onesie, a hat, and a warm blanket for outside time go a long way!

🏠 Indoor Comfort: Keep indoor temperatures between 68–72°F. Avoid space heaters near cribs or beds. Use a wearable blanket or sleep sack for safe sleep—no loose blankets in the crib!

🚗 Car Seat Safety: Bulky coats can interfere with car seat safety. Dress your baby in thin layers, then add a blanket over the straps if needed.

💧 Stay Hydrated: Cooler weather can be dehydrating. Make sure your baby is feeding regularly, whether by breast, bottle, or solid foods (if age-appropriate).

🌡️ Watch for Signs of Illness: Runny nose, fussiness, or a drop in energy may be early signs of a cold. If you’re concerned, give us a call—we’re here to help!

Florida winters may be short, but staying warm and safe is always in season. ❄️❤️

📞 Call us if you have any concerns or questions—your child’s health is our priority!

🚨 URGENT FLU ALERT FOR FLORIDA FAMILIES 🚨

Influenza activity across Florida is HIGH and rising, and this flu season has been especially severe for children.

At Florida Pediatric Group, we are seeing very sick children daily. Tragically, children in the United States die from influenza every year, and many of these deaths occur in previously healthy children when evaluation or treatment is delayed.

📊 What parents need to know:
• Influenza is not just a bad cold
• Pediatric flu deaths occur every flu season
• Infants, young children, and those with asthma or chronic conditions are at highest risk, but severe illness can affect any child

⏰ TIME MATTERS — EARLY DETECTION & TREATMENT SAVE LIVES
Antiviral medications work best when started within the first 24–48 hours of symptoms. Early treatment can:
✔ Reduce symptom severity
✔ Shorten illness duration
✔ Lower the risk of serious complications and hospitalization

🚨 Do NOT wait if your child has:
• Sudden fever
• Cough or sore throat
• Severe fatigue or body aches
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Trouble breathing
• Symptoms that are worsening instead of improving

🏥 CARE WHEN YOU NEED IT — EVEN FOR WORKING PARENTS
To ensure timely care for your child, we offer:
✅ Same-day sick appointments
✅ Care at ALL FIVE Florida Pediatric Group locations
✅ Extended weekday hours
✅ Saturday clinic available
✅ WALK-IN CLINIC AVAILABLE at our Wickham office

📞 Call or come in immediately if your child has flu-like symptoms. Waiting can mean missing the critical treatment window.

💉 Flu vaccination still matters
Even now, the flu vaccine can reduce illness severity and protect against complications.

Your child’s health should never wait.
We are here — same day, extended hours, Saturdays, and walk-ins at Wickham — to care for your family. 💙

❄️ Cold Weather Advisory for Newborns & Infants ❄️
From Florida Pediatric Group

Florida cold spells may be short, but they can be dangerous for newborns and young infants. Babies lose body heat faster than adults and cannot regulate their temperature well.

👶 Newborn Safety Tips During Cold Weather:

🧣 Dress in Layers
Dress your baby in one more layer than an adult would wear. Hats and socks help reduce heat loss, but avoid overdressing.

🛏️ Safe & Warm Sleep
• Always place baby on their back
• Use sleep sacks or wearable blankets
• ❌ No loose blankets, pillows, or hats in the crib
• Keep room temperature around 68–72°F

🔥 Use Heaters Safely
• Keep space heaters far from cribs
• Never use heating pads, hot water bottles, ovens, or grills to warm babies
• Avoid placing baby near drafts or cold windows

🌡️ Watch for Signs of Being Too Cold
Call us or seek medical care if your baby has:
• A temperature below 97.5°F (re**al)
• Trouble feeding
• Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking
• Cool, pale, or bluish skin

🏠 Florida Homes Reminder
Many homes aren’t designed for prolonged cold. During power outages, layer clothing and use safe skin-to-skin contact instead of unsafe heat sources.

❤️ A Message from Florida Pediatric Group:
Cold weather doesn’t last long here—but protecting your baby during it is critical. A few simple steps can keep your newborn safe, warm, and healthy.

📞 If you have concerns about your baby during cold weather, please contact Florida Pediatric Group—we are here for you and your family.
