Fun Fact Friday! ✨

Did you know that babies are actually born without any kneecaps? It’s true! 😮

Babies have a structure made of cartilage that resembles a kneecap, but they don’t fully develop until around 6 months of age. So for the first few months of their lives, they’re essentially “kneecap-less”! 🤷‍♀️👶

This is because cartilage is more flexible than bone, and it allows babies’ knees to bend and move easily as they learn to crawl and explore their surroundings. As they grow, the cartilage slowly hardens and forms into solid bone, giving them fully functional kneecaps.

It’s amazing to think about how our bodies continue to grow and develop even after we’re born. So the next time you see a baby crawling around, remember that their adorable little knees are still a work in progress! 🚼💕

🌍 Maternal Health Awareness 🌸
Did you know that nearly 290,000 birthing people worldwide die in childbirth each year? Shockingly, a third of those who survive face long-term health issues after pregnancy. “Maternal health in the perinatal period and beyond” reveals some underreported conditions affecting millions of birthing people globally. Here are 9 post-pregnancy health problems that can persist for months or even years:

Dyspareunia (pain during s*x) - 35%
Low back pain - 32%
A**l incontinence - 19%
Urinary incontinence - 8–31%
Anxiety - 9–24%
Depression - 11–17%
Perineal pain - 11%
Tokophobia (fear of childbirth) - 6–15%
Secondary infertility - 11%

Despite progress, maternal mortality remains a global challenge. The series highlights the importance of addressing social factors like gender inequality, racism, and low maternal education, alongside medical interventions.

But here’s the good news: we can all make a difference and help reverse this alarming trend. Together, we have the power to improve outcomes and provide the necessary support for maternal health in our communities. That’s why we’re inviting you to join us today on January 23, 2024, in discussing how each of us can play a vital role in supporting maternal health and bridging the gap in rural access to care. Your input and ideas are invaluable, so let’s raise awareness and work towards a world where all birthing people and their babies have access to the care they need. 💪🤰

Function Fact Friday!

👶 Did you know that at birth, the average baby’s brain is only about a quarter of the size of the average adult brain? 🧠 But here’s the truly mind-blowing part: it rapidly doubles in size during the first year of life and continues to grow at an astonishing rate, reaching about 80% of adult size by the age of 3! And by the time they turn 5, their brain is nearly fully grown, at an impressive 90% of adult size.

🌟 This remarkable growth in the early years of life highlights the incredible potential of a baby’s brain. It’s a critical period for learning and development, where their brain is actively forming neural connections and absorbing information from the world around them.🌍

So, let’s cherish and nurture the amazing brain growth in our little ones, providing them with a stimulating and supportive environment that encourages their curiosity, creativity, and love for learning. 🌈

📣 Exciting news! 🎉 On November 29th, our Welcome Baby program had the incredible opportunity to be a part of this year’s Human Donor Milk Drive. We are beyond grateful to the Yolo County Breastfeeding Coalition for hosting the event and the amazing team at San Jose Mother’s Milk Bank for their unwavering support in collecting and safely transporting all the donated milk. 🙌

But our gratitude doesn’t stop there! We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every member of our community who helped spread the word and actively participated in this noble cause. Your support and generosity have made a significant difference in the lives of so many families with newborn babies, both premature and full term. 🤱

Thanks to everyone’s collective effort, we are thrilled to announce that we were able to collect an astounding 9584 ounces of donated milk! 🍼 This amount of milk is enough to feed 68 newborn babies for an entire week! Just imagine the positive impact this will have on the little ones and their families. 💕

We couldn’t have achieved this milestone without the kindness and compassion of our community. Your dedication to supporting and nurturing the well-being of newborns is truly inspiring. Together, we are making a lasting difference in the lives of these precious babies. 🌟

Once again, a huge shoutout to the Yolo County Breastfeeding Coalition, San Jose Mother’s Milk Bank, and every individual who played a part in this incredible success. Your commitment to helping others is truly commendable. 🙏

Let’s continue to support each other and make a positive impact in our community. Together, we can support multiples families in our community💪

In honor of Prematurity Awareness Month, the Yolo County Breastfeeding Coalition has partnered with the San Jose Milk Bank, First 5 Yolo’s Welcome Baby Program, CommuniCare Health Centers, UC Davis Health, and Sutter Health Hospital Davis to host an amazing event raising awareness about the need for human milk donations and the importance of human milk banks for sick or premature infants.
This is a 2 day event where community groups involved in lactation come together to bring attention to the benefits of breast feeding and the incredible value of donor milk. This event is a safe space for breastfeeding and encourages lactation as a cultural norm to feed infants.
Not only is this event about raising awareness, but it also provides a great opportunity for mothers to connect and support each other while breastfeeding. Let's build a strong community and make a difference in the lives of premature infants and their families.
