Are you curious about your ancestors? We want our children and grandchildren to know about the ancestors whose lives helped make us who we are today. Our ancestors become real when we see their faces in treasured old family photos. As we discover census records, ship manifests and military service documents, we want to learn even more about them and how they lived. I am eager to help you discover more about your family history and help you share that history with your family.

One of the first steps in gathering information for your family tree...
Begin with yourself and then work backwards...
- interview parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins by phone or in person
- gather family records and photographs (have them labeled)
- gather official records and documents
- search informal records (baby books, newspaper clippings, family bibles, funeral cards, obituaries, school programs)
- always write your research notes on a full sheet of paper or in a spiral notebook

Much valuable information can be found in the Federal Census...

-1790-1840 - Gives name of head of household, number of free white males and females in various age categories. Also gives number of slaves, if any.

-1850 and later – Names every free person in household. With each decade, more questions are asked, more information provided.

-1900 Federal Census is VERY valuable –
It provides month and year of birth, number of years married, mother had how many children and number alive at census, year of immigration into USA, number of years in USA and naturalization status.
