Emotional regulation is one of the top reasons that adolescents come into our office to meet with our clinicians. While they are many useful techniques and methods our counselors use in therapy, there is much that can be done at home too, to help your child manage these big emotions. Some of these tips, according to the American Psychological Association are:

*To start early and talk about emotions as early on in life as possible

* Manage your own emotions and model good behavior

*Connect by being consistent and comforting

*Stay calm when these big emotions arise and help them to name them and come up with tools, strategies, and effective coping mechanisms (taking a walk, talking it out, writing).

*Punish less, praise more

*Be a team

*Check your expectations

The National Institute of Health reports that 57.8 million adults live with some sort of mental illness. This graph depicts the percentage of each racial group that makes up for that total population.
July celebrates Minority Mental Health Awareness, and while these numbers help us paint a picture of which groups may be effected the most by mental illness, there are still some people part of ethnic/racial/minority groups who are unaccounted for due to barriers that prevent them from receiving care such as: lack of insurance, stigma, language barriers, lack of diversity among mental health providers, lack of culturally competent providers, distrust in the health care system, and uncovered insurance benefits.
Below is a link to a guide that helps you navigate and find a culturally competent provider!

July, we recognize minority groups within the mental health population, because people of other ethnic and minority groups face unique challenges that sometimes go underlooked. Issues such as discrimination, poverty, inadequate healthcare coverage, stigma, and individuals not being able to find a therapist of their ethnic background all can contribute to someone of a minority population not getting the help they need. SO, this month we remind those individuals that we see you, and we care, and there is hope and help out there. Stay tuned for some more statistics and helpful resources!

Curious about what a therapy session looks like? Imagine, sitting down with someone who cares about you and wants to help you understand, process, and cope with whatever difficult feelings or situations you may be going through. At our practice, we see adolescents, teenagers, couples, and adults alike. We also offer psychological testing to those who may need it. Our primary focus is to help you understand and manage your mental health symptoms in a more balanced and practical way. Our clinicians will help to provide you with coping skills that you can take with you outside of our office walls and utilize them to your benefit. Therapy, at the end of the day though, is tailored to YOUR specific needs, so our clinicians will establish a treatment plan with you and lay ground work for what you two would like to accomplish together upon your first visit.
Call or email us and see if we would be a good fit for you!

Down to earth, compassionate care.

Connected Psychology is a team of psychologists who work with individuals and couples in Cleveland and across Ohio.

We are committed to helping you live a life that feels more calm and centered. Our clinicians value both the art and science of therapy–we believe that therapy should be individualized to you but rooted in empirically supported approaches to therapy and assessment. Most of our clients are struggling with anxiety, they are feeling insecure and worried (sometimes for reasons they can’t figure out) and feeling detached from those they love. But we know you don’t have to stay stuck or unhappy, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Our mission is to work together with you to develop common sense strategies you can use to improve your life, reduce your anxiety, and increase your confidence. Our goal is to help you feel healthier, stronger, and more connected–to yourself and those around you.

If you’re ready to work towards the life you want, we are ready to help you.
