Inclusion is so great for everyone!

In 1991, 18-year-old Alexa started her very first job at KFC. She was shy, wearing a slightly oversized uniform, and proudly pinned on her name tag. Born with Down syndrome, Alexa knew many people had low expectations—but she also knew her worth.

To her, this wasn’t just a fast food job. It was a chance to prove that kindness, consistency, and hard work are more powerful than any label. She made customers feel seen, brought treats for her coworkers, mentored new staff, and became the heart of her workplace.

After 33 years of dedication, Alexa is now retiring with pride. Her name has come to symbolize loyalty, strength, and inclusion in the workplace. She didn’t just clock in—she changed the culture and left a legacy of love and employee empowerment.

Alexa’s journey is a beautiful reminder that diversity hiring, inclusive employment, and supporting special needs workers isn’t just good policy—it’s good for the soul.

Let’s celebrate champions like Alexa who make the world a better place—one shift, one smile, one heart at a time.

People with developmental and intellectual disabilities have had to fight to be seen as the rightful owners of their own lives, their own space. When you enter someone’s home as a support worker, you’re not clocking into your environment, you’re walking into theirs. That’s sacred.

It’s not about being polite, it’s about being person-centred in the deepest way. Shoes off if they ask. Quiet if they need it. Ask before moving things. Listen before doing. It’s their home, their rules, their life.

Dignity doesn’t need a policy. It needs practice.

Many thanks to my friends of Johnson McGinnis Elder Care Law for a great Time Out Workshop yesterday. I was given the honor of being asked to present at this incredible event. Wow—Impressive turnout! People seemed to be as engaged as I was excited to share from the heart.

Grateful, as well, for the amazing care providers of Tennessee and for the incredible work they do—as well as the law firm—in supporting the community. We personally know that navigating the issues of caregiving is made easier for everyone—especially the end client—with this kind of outreach support and involvement. Kudos to all!

If you read the response at the bottom, it will be something enlightening and definitely applicable to humans, too.

There’s a lot about this that is actually smart. It combines technology now being used for motorcyclists and can help others who are a fall risk. I’d definitely suggest checking with an Occupational Therapist familiar with both the product and the person who will be using it to ensure safety.

So cool!

Sounds about right… In the 23+ years of doing this business, let alone our own experience with Cassi (3/31/98-6/20/14) and her big brother, Nick, all of which lead to HomeBase Solutions, we’ve seen other siblings get into careers intended to help their brother and/or sister and others like them. It’s one of the most heartwarming facets of humanity I have experienced.

Twin brothers were born in an American family in 1978. The brother, who was five minutes older, had a healthy heart, but the younger one also suffered from cardiomyopathy and cerebral palsy. However, this circumstance only brought the boys closer.
The "older" brother always took care of the "younger," helped him, motivated him, and even when the sick boy at the age of 13 needed the heart of a voluntary donor, the healthier brother wanted to commit su***de so that his heart could be transplanted to his brother. The vital organ was found on time, and the "older" boy went on to the studies of a biochemical engineer after school so that he could invent a cure for the disease, for his brother and other people, but as fate determined otherwise.
He became an actor and even a Hollywood star who made MILLIONS in the stock market and used it to start THORN an organization that stops child trafficking.
The younger brother became an advocate and public speaker for the rights of children with cerebral palsy. Today, Ashton and Michael Kutcher are active in charity work together.
