I cannot *stress* this enough! Your nerdy Wellness RN is digging in to the research on vitamin C and how it affects stress and supports your adrenals. Here's a little bit about it:
Your adrenals function in multiple ways, but one major function is your ✨️stress response.✨️ They are incredible at their job! Much like everything else in life, however, moderation is key to preventing burnout.
Adrenal dysfunction (or fatigue) is often caused by prolonged or extreme stress, metabolic disorders, etc., and can cause insulin resistance, fat storage, drained energy reserves🔋, weakness, elevated blood pressure which can lead to cardiovascular disease💔, GI dysfunction💩, and premature aging👵.
Where does vitamin C fit in? Your adrenals store most of your body's vitamin C! It synthesizes your stress hormones so that your adrenals can function properly. Not only does it synthesize stress hormones, it regulates them, thus controlling the release of cortisol! As an antioxidant, it protects the adrenals from oxidative stress. Vitamin C is the battery that keeps your adrenals functioning at their best. But when you're stressed, you are using up that battery faster than the adrenals can keep up.
*Bonus: vitamin C aids in iron absorption! Iron helps with blood production, but also anxiety and depression. More stress relief, yay!
Here's how to get more vitamin C:
🍊Diet - Citrus fruits, bell peppers, kiwi, strawberries, cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens, and tropical fruits.
💊Supplementation - take on an empty stomach for higher absorption.
💉IV administration - goes straight into the blood stream, bypassing GI limits and being completely absorbed.
