So I change the word “could” to

I “can” drink less coffee. But what is my why?

I can drink less coffee because I want to sleep better.

I want to sleep better to be better. Be a better person, friend, spouse, mother, athlete. So therefore I can drink less coffee.

The funny thing about nutrition is that being “off track” doesn’t mean we have stopped eating altogether. We are still making choices daily about what we will eat. If you think you are off track you already recognize that your choices are not the best.

STOP over complicating it.

Make a better choice at your next meal. Better doesn’t mean perfect! Better could be one less taco on taco Tuesday. Better could be ordering a grilled chicken sandwich instead of fried. Better could be water instead of soda.

Think ahead to your next meal. What can you do better?
Visualize it.
Execute.

There is no secret diet strategy that will magically help you lose weight.

“But I am totally plant based” means nothing until you know how many calories you are consuming.

To lose weight you must be in a caloric deficit.

Count your calories for 1 week to set a base line. You have to know where you are starting to get to your destination.

We all have non-negotiable things in our diet. And that is okay. If you need to have those cookies with your coffee in the morning, go for it. Just be clear on the cost. What else will you eliminate from your diet today that is 240 cals? What is negotiable for you? Start there.

Weight gain doesn’t come from eating bananas or potatoes. The universal diet problem is the OVER-eating of processed food.

In comparison to any other time in history, our lives are pretty indulgent. We no longer wait for true special moments to enjoy eating out or having our favorite dessert. We can buy whatever goodie we want, whenever we want it. We are not deprived.

Processed foods are cheaply made, easily available, calorically dense

and delicious.

We can of course have the fun foods but this is where the weight gain comes from.

The universal diet problem is the overeating of processed foods.

It all depends on you. On your lifestyle, your preferences and your goals. The BEST diet is going to be unique to you.

Not every meal can be chicken and broccoli- and that’s okay! But telling yourself that I’ll start my diet____” only removes your responsibility in your mind. Reality happens 3x a day when you decide what you will eat, and only you can control what that will look like.

Sounds easy. But is this your routine?

Adequate sleep directly affects weight loss. Sleep regulates metabolism, which includes hormones, immunity and energy balance (hello hunger cues and appetite)!

Strategy: set a target for 8 hours of sleep.

DO THE MATH. If you always wake up at 7:00am then you need to be in bed at 11:00.

You can’t always control whether you get a certain amount of sleep but you can plan for it.

Why?  Because you will start the day off right!  If you have cookies or donuts for breakfast you are less likely to have...

Commit to a healthy dose of fruits or vegetables at breakfast. This is flexible for everyone’s individual tastes and it doesn’t eliminate other things.

Read that again:

Food is PART OF the positive experience-not THE positive experience.

Whether at a holiday meal or a small gathering of friends; food is usually involved. And that is okay. Eat the fun foods in moderation.

The question really becomes then “What is your routine for the other 98 meals this season?”
