Sometimes I feel just blank. I know I might be feeling something, maybe a lot of somethings, but it’s like I have an “out to lunch sign” on my forehead.

Journaling helps create, seemingly out of nowhere, fully formed thoughts and feelings - thoughts and feelings that maybe would flash into my conscious awareness, but then as quickly fadeaway.

Ever go to your phone to look something up, and an hour later you’ve totally forgotten what you went there for? That’s sometimes what happens when I try to check in with myself without journaling. I think a lot of thoughts, but they weren’t the thought that I was looking for.

How long did it take you to find Waldo?

Getting to the heart of the matter with journaling can take some practice.

One way to start is by taking a deep breath and grounding yourself by noticing the feeling of your body in your seat and the pen(cil) in your hand and asking yourself how you’re feeling.

Then, start writing a stream-of-consciousness answer the question, “What’s coming up for me?”

Don’t edit. Don’t judge. Don’t lift pen(cil) from page for 10 minutes, or the duration of one page.

Were you able to go from surface into someplace deeper? Ask yourself, “how do I feel now?”

Noticing how you feel before and after journaling is a great way to celebrate your micowin, notice your progress and reinforce the habit.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve everyone.

This is your validating remember that sensitive people can feel overwhelmed during the holidays.

Even within the most loving families, triggers happen.

Family is the final frontier.

You can be feeling on top of the world and one comment from a relative can propel you back to a vulnerable version of you from your shared past.

Staying grounded during the holidays often requires an extra level of self-regulation, of intentionally reminding yourself that your emotions are not entwined with others, that you are fine, you are whole.

Hide a journal and pen in the bathroom to scribble some feelings during the day, take a walk outside and record a voice memo.

How do you stay grounded during the holidays?

Take time for yourself this weekend. Relax, regroup, recharge. How do you plan to nourish yourself this weekend?
