Community-Run Organization Working To Defeat The Stigma On Mental Health

You are Not Alone!

The JCK Foundation was created in memory to our friend John Cleaver Kelly to raise public awareness about the paralyzing effects of the brain disorder known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Although John struggled with his disease, he helped and inspired a whole community. We will reach out to individuals and groups through lectures, social media and fundraisers for OCD research. Through a compassionate and accurate description of OCD we hope to erase the stigma and complacent attitude about OCD which is currently portrayed in the media. HISTORY

By sharing the personal story of one man's courageous battle with the disease, the JCK Foundation works to educate communities that OCD is more than an annoying habit, but a brain disorder that can consume an individual's thoughts, actions, and decisions. OCD is not a lifestyle that afflicted people chose. John (JCK) wanted more than anything to be free from the shackles of OCD. Our goal is to spread his story about how challenging living with OCD can be. We want those without a mental ailment to be compassionate, accepting and have a greater understanding of the struggle and suffering that occurs with OCD and other mental disorders We want to use John’s story to break the stigma and create freedom of expression for the OCD community. JOHN’S STORY

John Cleaver Kelly was a brilliant, caring, and fascinating human being. He traveled to China by himself. He was a philanthropist who drove around the country raising awareness about issues he cared deeply about such as Invisible Children. He was a loving brother and son. His friends adored and looked up to him. He was an honor student at a world renowned high school, and university. He loved playing sports and staying active. He also suffered from a debilitating case of OCD. John was able to accomplish so much while dealing with a personal demon. His closest friends and peers never knew the seriousness of John's pain until it was too late. At the young age of 24, John was driven to suicide by this invisible, and sometimes mentally paralyzing disease. It is in his memory that JCK Foundation is being created. For one with OCD or any sort of mental illness, daily living can seem like such a struggle at times. Many people who battle OCD and mental illness feel as if they are going at it alone. Our goal is to get those suffering help, and help them realize that they are not at all alone in this battle. As an OCD sufferer myself, John was constantly encouraging me through my own bouts, and would always make sure I was doing well. He inspired me, and was the reason I was able to get help and accept myself. When I realized I was not alone, and had John fighting side-by-side with me, it was an amazing feeling. Whenever I spoke to John he would ALWAYS tell me, to KEEP FIGHTING the FIGHT, and to never give up. I looked up to him, not only because I was three years younger, but because he helped teach me to accept myself. In John’s name, we are not going to give up until the world looks at OCD and mental illness differently. CURRENT ACHIEVMENTS

Since John’s death in March of 2011, our community of Dobbs Ferry, New York came together has raised over 20,000 dollars in John’s name which has been contributed to the International OCD Foundation. In May of 2012, the 23-minute documentary “Heroes Get Remembered But Legends Never Die” was created, highlighting John’s incredible life, while spreading much needed awareness about OCD. It is a film that we believe changes the way the everyday person looks at OCD, and hopefully can inspire you to think differently about mental health and OCD. Please take 23 minutes to watch and share the film which will keep John’s legacy and our mission thriving. HEROES GET REMEBERED BUT LEGENDS NEVER DIE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDJGSHF6hJk

The common belief held in society is that OCD is some type of weird habit a lot of people deal with to relieve stress. Although cases and symptoms vary on a case by case basis, OCD is a mental disorder that can drive seemingly normal, and healthy people like John Kelly to a dark place. The JCK Foundation believes it is their mission to help educate people all over the world what they can do to help themselves, and the people closest to them cope with OCD. John inspires me everyday to keep fighting my OCD, and has gotten me through some of my toughest battles. We won’t stop until he inspires you too. NEVER GIVE UP. HOW YOU CAN HELP

What an unbelievable night in Dobbs Ferry 💚

Seeing and come together is so incredibly special. Seeing the youth in our hometowns come together and have this cause be meaningful to them means more to us than we can ever put into words! The energy, and effort on the court from each teams was inspiring and being able to work with both teams and to get to know these amazing young men made the night even more special 💚

There was some John Kelly magic in the air as set the all time-section 1 scoring record that gave us a moment we will never forget!! Congrats to Anthony as it couldn’t have happened to a better kid!!!

To all the players, we are so proud of you! Keep on shining your light, looking out for each other , and setting an example of making these conversations about mental health approachable💚

Best of luck to both teams the rest of the season and enjoy the heck out of every moment with each other!!

We had the absolute pleasure of working with the 7th graders at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, NJ!!

The kids were so inspiring and the sharing process was what stuck out to me the most. In middle school it’s not easy to share openly and honestly with your classmates- there’s so much insecurity and fear of judgement. So many students but their heart and honesty into these answers and it was evident just by how respectfully and inspired the rest of their classmates reacted to their answers 💚 the work these students did yesterday really inspired us and also our newest member of the team did an unbelievable job of helping lead these discussion!!

The JCK Foundation is excited to partner with Student Assistance Services (SAS) Corporation to launch a Referral Program. This initiative helps connect adolescents to appropriate mental health and support resources.

The Referral Program provides non-emergency support for concerns related to mental health, substance use, bullying, and gambling. Families and adolescents can call (914) 504-0090 between the hours of 8 am to 4 pmto be connected with a liaison at the SAS Counseling Center. The Counseling Center staff will provide personalized guidance for families to help them navigate and access community-based resources that best meet their needs. When families or school staff contact JCK and identify a student in need, this partnership will help youth connect directly to the most appropriate services.

This program is free of charge. It is not an emergency hotline, but a resource for youth and families to obtain tailored support from master’s level professionals who can guide them toward the right network of professionals. The program has officially launched and the phone number is now open for calls!

We spent an incredibly two days with the students at working with the 9th and 10th grade and we feel so incredibly grateful💚

The energy, honesty and willingness to answer questions so deeply was so incredibly special. The way these students not only answered the questions, but really led deep discussion about this topic meant so much to us. There’s nothing greater than when we see students take initiative to help each other and do whatever they can to make their classmates feel comfortable about a topic that isn’t always easy. The leadership and kindness on display these last two days will stay with us forever 💚

It was also amazing running into so many of the 11th graders we’ve worked with in the past! Your warm welcome and conversations meant so much to us!

Keep on shining your light and leading by example!! You are making such a deep impact on this world and on each other and we couldn’t be more proud of you!!

We had such a special two days working with the whole school at 💚

These last two days we really were able to engrain ourselves in the community and work with some remarkable young men!! It’s always so special when you see young men having the courage to be open and talk about how much this topic means to them. We had some amazing one on one conversations while also seeing so much courage and bravery in the group activities. We always talk about the importance of setting an example that it’s not only ok to have these conversations but encouraging our classmates to look out for each other and lift up those who may be isolated 💚

The theme of “showing others their value” was so prevalent and these legends left such a huge mark on us!

Also congrats to and on the huge win agains Summit tonight!!

Keep shining your light legends 💚
