You’ve probably told yourself at some point: “I just need to relax.”
But no matter how many times you try…your body doesn’t seem to get the message.
Your mind keeps going. Your body stays tense. You don’t fully settle.
And it can start to feel frustrating.
Like… Why can’t I just calm down?
This is something I hear often from people I work with.
And the truth is— your nervous system isn’t ignoring you.
It’s responding based on what it has learned.
When your brain has experienced stress over time,it can start to default to a more alert, protective state.
Not because something is wrong with you, but because your system is trying to keep you safe.
The challenge is… what once helped can start to feel like too much.
So instead of asking, “Why can’t I relax?”
A more supportive question might be:
“What does my system need to feel safe enough to settle?”
I’m curious… Have you ever felt like your body just won’t “turn off,” even when you want it to?
