Many people have heard of the five elements in Chinese Medicine, but many aren’t aware, that each element also corresponds to a specific Spirit, and each spirit is housed in one of the five yin organs. The metal element for instance, is associated with the lungs, which house the Po Spirit.
The Po Spirit in Chinese Medicine is the aspect of our soul that is tethered to the earth, and referred to as our animal soul. This is the aspect of our soul which is responsible for our intuitive, gut knowing and responses, our emotional and somatic experiences, our unconscious drives and instincts, and our sensory perceptions.
This aspect of our soul can become disturbed by trauma, intense emotional upheaval, restrictive childhood expression, unintegrated shadow aspects, and breaks, between our unconscious and conscious drives and motivations. All of which dampen down our innate natural expression, and disturb and eventually bury our Po Spirit.
These disturbances manifest on the physical level as depression, chronic pain, anxiety, psychosomatic disturbances, eating disorders, and irrational thoughts and actions.
Some ways to awaken and bring your Po Spirit back into health are to get in touch with your body, through somatic awareness. Mindfully integrating breath and body movements like yoga, tai qi and dance. Awakening your senses and observing animals in their natural environments, which will help re-awaken you, to your own wild, uninhibited nature.

In my practice, I specifically focus on the health and imbalances of the five spirits, which can address the deep, underlying root cause of many chronic and unresolved health conditions.
