Last but not least! We don’t always have control over what our children eat, but we can control what foods we keep in the house and can model healthy eating. Breakfast and lunch options will give them the brain power to meet academic and social challenges throughout the day. I recommend healthy proteins, such as eggs and nut butters, and natural fruits.

The school year can bring packed schedules with homework and extracurricular activities, making it challenging to find time for other things. Set aside a regular time—whether right after school, in the evenings, or on weekends—to connect with your children. Use this time to show interest in their lives and foster open communication, ensuring they know you’re always there to listen.

Set boundaries and stick with them! As the new school year begins, decide what is truly important to help your kids succeed. A few examples include limiting screen time, setting curfews, and deciding on a reasonable limit of after school activities per week. Kids need bumpers (aka boundaries). They may resist when the brush up against them. Lovingly stay the course to support their growth.

“MOOOOMMMMM! I CAN’T FIND MY SOCKS!”

Sound familiar? Choosing outfits and gathering everything needed for the day can be time-consuming when getting ready. Once school starts, streamline your mornings by organizing and laying out everything—from clothes to backpacks—the night before. This simple step can save you a lot of time and reduce stress when it’s time to get everyone out the door in the morning

Setting up a designated homework area is an excellent way to encourage good study habits. Opt for a quiet, distraction-free spot like the den, or choose a place where you can offer help, such as the kitchen while you’re cooking dinner. Collaborate with your child to establish a consistent time and place for homework each day. Make sure the area is stocked with all the necessary supplies—scratch paper, pens, pencils, markers, calculators, and more—so everything they need is easily accessible. This routine will help them stay focused and reassured that support is always nearby if needed.

Consistency is crucial for learning, especially during transitions. Establishing a routine can provide the structure and control needed to navigate stressful times, including back-to-school. Whatever your routine looks like, make sure it’s in place before the first day of school. This will help make that day feel like “just another day” and reduce unpredictability.

Involve your kids in the process! A lot of resistance can stem from the lack of control children feel, so offer choices whenever possible and give them a say in the routine.

One effective way to do this is by creating morning and evening checklists together. Collaborate on a few key steps that your child can check off themselves. Once the list is made, let them decorate it however they like and post it somewhere within their reach. This gives them a special way to feel involved and accomplished every day!

To get your child excited about starting a new grade, shop for school supplies together. Let them choose their own backpack, lunchbox, and other essentials. This not only builds excitement but also gives them a sense of responsibility.

Starting school (especially if it is a new school) can be very scary & send our kids’ nervous systems into overdrive. Having just ONE point of connection can make the first day better. What better person to connect with than the teacher? If possible, schedule a meet and greet your child’s teacher prior to the first day. If that’s not possible, have your child write a note or email to the teacher introducing him/herself. I bet you get a note, call or email back! BUT even if you don’t, the act of orienting your child towards building the connection will ease those first day jitters.

Sticking to a bedtime routine during the summer can be tough. For a more peaceful & happy morning on the first day of school, it’s a good idea to start reestablishing bedtimes before school begins.

Start TONIGHT! Split the difference between summer bedtime and what school year bedtime will be. Keep doing this until you’ve reached your school year bedtime goal. By easing into the new schedule a few minutes at a time, they’ll avoid the shock of suddenly waking up early each day.

Start discussing the upcoming school year with your child to help them get excited about what’s ahead. You might say, “Schools starting ____. How do you feel about starting the new year?” With a follow up, “What are you looking forward to?”

When talking with your child, focus on being a good listener. Children need to express their excitement, as well as, worries and frustrations with someone who listens with empathy, even if there aren’t immediate solutions. If your child expresses concern, you could reply, “It sounds like you’re worried. Can you tell me more about what’s on your mind? What’s the most troubling part?”

Your goal is to create a safe space for your child to share their feelings without trying to immediately solve their problems. Help them think about how they might handle their worries if they come up, and reassure them that they have support and won’t be alone in facing challenges.
