*This is not a road less traveled post*

This is a post about decisions.

Our entire life we are faced with decisions. Small ones like cream in your coffee and big ones like one cookie or two (the answer is cream and two 😉)

I jest of course.

Some decisions can be big. Like life altering big. Career for instance. Where you choose to live. Parters, friends and how you spend your time and energy.

I try to not let those decisions freeze me in place or to get hung up on bad decisions of my past. Instead I try to leap and follow what I think is right for me.

I agree with the statement that the decisions you make today effect your tomorrow. However, what that statement misses is that tomorrow will someday be today with more opportunities for choice.

To put this more simply. Don’t worry if today you choose to have just one cookie, tomorrow there is a chance to choose two.

With a new year fast approaching there is a tendency to change literally everything about you, your habits and your lifestyle.

I am going to workout every single day.

Keto here I come!

I think I may give up cheese for a while.

I am going to lose 20 lbs, give up drinking, meditate every day, stay organized, finally start my business and become an all around amazing person with no flaws so watch out world!

Any of this sound familiar?

I want to tell you: don’t do it.

I am ALL ABOUT change, growth and pushing to become the best, healthiest version of yourself.

But don’t you want to make changes that will last a lifetime? So you can feel good in your body and be healthy for your entire life?

Never have I heard anyone say “I want to be healthy for just this year, then I’ll be good”

So, instead of a drastic resolution for the new year I want you to answer this question.

Can I do this the rest of my life?

Can I eat veggies every day for the rest of my life?

Can I drink a liter of water every day for the rest of my life?

Can I do yoga once a week for the rest of my life?

Be real, be honest and answer the question.

It is a commitment but if you are planning a resolution of any kind you are already looking for change. Why not make a small change that has a lifelong impact.

When I was 16 I left home to go backpacking in Alaska. Ever since then I knew I wanted to work in the mountains.

I idolized my guides on that trip. I thrived in the simple task of living in the mountains. I loved problem solving and laughing with a new found freedom.

I saw so clearly who I became in the mountains. It was like I was meeting myself for the first time. I wanted to create a life where I could help people have that same experience.

So I did. As my adult self I got to work side by side with the same folks I idolized back when I was so young. I loved it. I truly did. I mean this picture is me working in the middle of nowhere in the Yukon. Dirty hair, dirty pants, laughing and making up songs. Truly my element.

As I grew in this world I learned that this life was not for me. I missed phone calls, weddings, births, and so much more. Always driving to a new place alone and leaving that place alone.

It was a hard thing to swallow. A hard thing to let go of. So I wrote a list of what I loved about the job.

- Teaching
- Leading
- People and connection
- Pushing folks outside
- Laughter
- Growth

After I made that list I knew I could check those boxes in another way.

This is what the Alpine Start Collective will be. A collective where we will all teach, lead, connect, get outside, laugh and grow.

It checks the boxes.

Guaranteed to not get a 6 pack.

This week I am taking some time to explain The Alpine Start Collective (coming 2021!!) and this is an important point. It also makes me giggle.

This movement community is not about changing our shape, becoming a certain size and I will never promise that. Will those things potentially happen, sure, but that is not why I am here.

So many programs out there promise magical transformations. I will not do that. It isn’t realistic.

My goal and promise is to lead the way so you can learn the tools to feel the best in your body and feel the best in your movement.

My goal is to help you run farther and faster if that’s what you want. My goal is to help you ski all day with flow if that is what you want. My goal is to help you feel confident stepping on the starting line of a race you have always been to nervous to walk up to.

My goal is to help you step up, step out and climb high.

✨The Alpine Start Collective✨

Starting (sometime) in 2021 I am launching a new virtual branch of Alpine Start Fitness.

I have been slowly scheming, working and building this for a long time now and it’s time I share my secrets.

The Alpine Start Collective is a monthly membership to support YOU and YOUR body. It will push you outside and allow you to feel more free, fluid and safe in your movement.

A community of movers looking for a supportive, welcoming and no judgment space to share and set goals. A fitness and health membership designed for those that like to move outside. From walking your dog to scaling mountains we all need to take care of our bodies to maintain good function.

A community of movement misfits striving for a sustainable relationship with fitness, health and wellness.

Stay tuned to my stories this week as I explain more and ask for your input.

I am so excited for this and I hope you are too 🤗🥳.

Wouldn’t be here saying this today if it weren’t for the amazing person and talent behind . Creator of this amazing logo and more that is yet to come.

I never want to stop learning.

This winter I am going to learn how to finish building a home. I am a big picture person and usually let details slip away. I want to learn to be more detail oriented... well because we have to tile.

I am going to learn to snowmobile. As best I can at least. Embracing being new at a winter sport is hard for me because I like to be good at things. Learning to let go of that need will be step #1.

I also want to learn to slow down and be patient. When I want something I go for it. It is definitely my biggest strength and my biggest weakness. I want to learn to ride the waves more.

Oh and fitness related I am working on a summersault pistol squat transition. Anyone else?!?

What new thing are you learning?!

A little quarantine workout for you if you are stuck in the basement like I currently am. Or if you are just looking for a little challenge or a mix up to your current routine.

I made this while singing The 12 Days of Christmas (you are very welcome for now having that in your head for the next 24 hours)

A few things to note:

This is a DAY CHALLENGE. So I take all day to complete 10 sets of 10 of each exercise. Pro tip: if you do a round after each episode of the office you watch then BOOM 10 episodes later you are done. This allows you to have movement through your day and not get couch trapped.

I made this for me. Maybe 1 round feels like enough for you. Or reducing to 5 reps. Listen to your body, it usually knows what it needs.

I am healthy. If you are quarantined because you are sick then REST and RECOVER 💜.

I hate fitness challenges. I think they can set you up for frustration and negative self talk. I am doing this workout challenge because I know very clearly that it does not reflect my normal life and will not be my lasting routine.

Save this or start it now 💪💪 quarantine or not.

If you do not have dumbbells, anything of equal weight that you can hold will do.

For the past year I have felt totally out of control of my own life. Anyone else?

Injury has prevented me from moving the way I want and doing what I want. At times it prevented me from eating what I want and even peeing when I wanted.

Covid took away a lot of our freedoms. I have closed my gym 5 times in the past year.

Building has been actually amazing despite how much we complain about the work load. However, at a drop of a hat we are driving to Kalispell for a random whatever or staying up late working in the dark to keep the building train moving forward.

Building a small business means I feel like I am grinding a lot at work. Trying to grow and show up fully for my clients.

2 Friday’s ago I felt like I was about to have my freedom back. I was a week away from the arbitrary day I got to ski. Winter ready was over and I was going to slow down my work load. Drywall is being hung at the house which means we are hands off. and I were going to escape to the mountains.

Then Trav got Covid. All at once everything stopped. Trapped once again. I cried for the loss of work, for the loss of my first day of skiing that I have been waiting a year and a half for. I spent probably a good 3 days feeling sorry for myself.

But if I remove the specifics from our situation this is just life. Yes maybe a little more extreme this year than others but life throws curveballs. It makes you do things you don’t actually want to do. It is your attitude that makes it better. That sees the silver lining.

So I am focused on what I can control. I am cooking up a storm. Working out and brainstorming ideas from my yoga mat in our little basement apartment. I am teaching Talus a host of new tricks and picking out lighting for our house.

Turns out I can accomplish a lot when I stop feeling sorry for myself.

Someone asked me recently to describe my brand.

The first word that came to my mind was “dirty”. I thought: I definitely can’t say that, who wants to define their brand as dirty.... well I guess I do.

I want to take a moment to explain what I mean by dirty. It’s that sticky sweat feeling between your back and backpack. It is the dust that puffs off your socks that you peel off sitting on your tailgate. It is the mud puddle your dog makes in your back seat. It is the pine needles that stick to your skins after early season turns. It is the breakfast burrito wrapper in your pocket.

It is that gritty, dirty, beautiful feeling you get from moving outside.

When I left the guiding industry I wanted to keep helping people get into the mountains and get a little dirty.

So here I am, in a different way trying to reach the same goal.

Instagram does not always feel like a safe space for me.

But I use it for work and my personal life. It is essentially where I do all my marketing. It connects me to old friends. I love that about it.

For me I am the most triggered by watching videos of people skiing. Watching the thing that brings me the most joy, release and freedom from a tiny screen while I pedal away on a stationary bike makes me want to scream, cry and throw up all at the same time. To be honest I thought I would be back at it by now. I am not, and that’s okay because I am close and big picture I have the rest of my life to be out there and not in here.

I almost deleted the app from my phone this weekend but I feel like I couldn’t. Felt like I needed to not run away because unless I change careers to some degree I need to be here. So what I did was wrote down what is the most upsetting and put words to the WHY. That alone helped be practice acceptance. I take a deep breath and practice patience. I take another deep breath and roll through all the other rad things I have going on.

If this platform doesn’t always feel like a safe productive place for you I want you to really call out what it is. Is it seeing people with perfect bodies, perfect lives, sweet uncrying children? Then take a moment and write down all the rad parts of your body, the parts of your life that you love and the amazing things about your fam. Then put the phone down and move 😉

Yesterday was the last day of Winter Ready 2020 and I feel PROUD.

65 strong and talented individuals finished this program yesterday and I am proud. Proud of their hard work, dedication and grit.

I am also proud of myself. It has been a trying year.... for all of us. Through many gym closures, stress, no sleep and well.... you all get it, I had a success here.

How I measure success of this program is that folks are feeling stronger, healthier and more confident than when we started. Folks got out in the mountains in the rain, mud, snow and ice. Folks tried new things and supported each other in the process.

I have learned A LOT in my second round of Winter Ready and I can’t wait for round 3.

As for me. Winter is my season. I will be spending a lot of time with my family and friends in the mountains. I will be engaging more fully with all my private clients and cooking up some new things behind the scenes.

❤️

Reframe your why.

I always try to take the reason why we exercise away from numbers on the scale, size of clothes, and how we look.

My reason why is so I can glide through the mountains with ease and flow. I spend time at the squat rack so I can spend time here. I feel like the most beautiful powerful version of myself when I am surrounded by snow no matter my shape or size.

What is your reason why? Tell me in the comments below.
