OSHA Silica Rule

The new OSHA silica standard has an Action Level of 25µg/m3 and a Permissible Exposure Limit of 50 µg/m3. This applies to any exposure to crystalline silica that could reasonably be expected to create respirable silica above 25 µg/m3.

Where can expect to find silica?: concrete, spackle, drywall, stone, rock, ceramic products, plaster, etc…

What causes silica to become respirable?: sawing, cutting, grinding, drilling, crushing, housekeeping, etc…

What does OSHA require?:
Respirator use, training and fit testing
silica training
two separate medical evaluation
an exposure control plan
exposure assessment monitoring
tracking silica exposure time and respirator use times
protecting other exposed workers (not employed by you)
specific housekeeping

Call us to help you make sense of this new regulation.

Answer to last weeks post: The hazard in the picture is inadequate fall protection (large blue circle) for an elevator shaft. Safety guardrails are required to have three parts. A top rail at 42 inches (+ or - 3 inches), a mid-rail and toe-board. This citation and penalty was applied to the general contractor, the framers and the electricians.

We represented the electrical contractors in this case. Why were they included? .... OSHA's multi employer citation policy allows the agency to cite and penalize employers for allowing their workers to be exposed to someone else's hazard. The red circle and small blue circle show the newly installed electrical wiring. There was no evidence that proper fall protection was in place during the installation of the new wiring.

What's wrong with this picture? Who gets the OSHA citation and penalty (if there is a hazard)? We will share the answer ...
