It’s always so bittersweet when I have kiddos graduate from speech! I love seeing and playing with little buddies but am SO proud when they have met their goals and are able to communicate effectively! Had to say goodbye to two sweet kids this summer but celebrating their hard work!

I've been able to witness first hand the gift of AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). Access to communication is so important for all ages!

We introduced AAC to a 2 year old. By 3 he had so much language he didn’t use the AAC at all.

We introduced a nonspeaking 6 year old to AAC, by 7 he was using it plus starting to use spoken language.

We introduced an inconsistently speaking 9 year old to AAC, by the second session he was using it along with spoken language.

We introduced a minimally speaking 12 year old to AAC, within a month he was using it.

We consulted with a 24 year old speaking young woman, who wanted to start using AAC because spoken language felt too demanding and she wanted another way to communicate.

We constantly hear that it’s never too early for AAC, but we always have to remember…

that it’s also never too late.

HIPPY has an all new summer program for parents of 2-4 year olds. We have trained home visitors that will bring and engagingly role play fun educational curriculum and books with the child’s caregiver. Program starts July 15th! ✨

It's hard to decide where to spend money and what continuing education credits to take. I have a couple of kiddos on my caseload who I knew could benefit from me having more knowledge of Gestalt Language Processing so finally bit the bullet and took a more comprehensive course on it! I love having this as a tool in the toolbox and being able to bring it to North Texas!

If your child is in speech - skip this post- it’s not relevant 😘

Milestones can be so helpful for parents to know when a speech and language evaluation is needed but these are NOT the end all- be all. Many kids can meet milestones and need speech therapy while others may be behind on milestones but not need speech therapy.

But I am soooooo pro evaluation and early intervention that I think these are helpful to many! Once a child is getting support - meeting milestones may be a goal but is also may not be the goal. And getting an evaluation and determining a need to speech support is SO MUCH more than a simple list of skills. So- if your child isn’t quite meeting these, I recommend an evaluation. If your child IS meeting these but anyone thinks an evaluation is needed, I recommend an evaluation!
