Today's Daily Reflection was like a big ol blow to the gut...well at first anyways. Then, as I often challenge others to do, I looked at it from a different perspective. And you know what?! I kind of found some peace in it. Sometimes when we can give our pain a purpose and grasp onto the hope of knowing it will pass, the healing can truly begin.

The weekend had me thinking quite a bit about how just one thing can evoke SO MANY EMOTIONS...pride, thrill, anxiety, joy, terror, and much more...all depending on the perspective. Maybe you can guess who was feeling what this weekend as this momma watched her baby out on the ginormous sand dunes! 😳😱😬 So this is just a friendly reminder to keep in mind how one person feels about something may be completely opposite for another. Always be kind and remember a little empathy goes a long way! 😊

For about three months we fought LOTS of crying with this little guy! I'm talking soaking wet blankets after being in the crate for just a bit...tears and whines for I'm sure what felt like eternity to him and quite a few sleepless hours for his humans. So we decided to try the big kennel and break the puppy training rules. We were desperate! And you know what, he's decided it's not so bad. Thank goodness! But it got me thinking about this quote...

"Beneath every behavior there is a feeling. And beneath every feeling there is a need. And when we meet that need rather than focus on the behavior, we begin to deal with the cause, not the symptom."

Poor Deucers will probably never be able to tell me if he was scared, claustrophobic, or angry in those smaller crates. Maybe they were too dark or he didn't like the plastic. Regardless, it was a good reminder that we ALL have needs and feelings beyond the behavior. And when we finally stopped to address his needs, we all got a little more sleep at night! 😊 May this be a gentle reminder to check in with yourself, your spouse, your kiddos, a friend, whoever it might be and know that sometimes we don't necessarily mean to act they way we do; there's probably just a need waiting to be met! So take care of yourself! And if you ever need someone to help, I work with some pretty amazing people in my line of work who would be more than happy to listen! Take care! ❤️

I recently met a Vietnam veteran - not a client but simply someone by chance. As we struck up conversation, he learned I was a therapist. The man then went on to share how he'd consider himself fairly type A and would have even seen it as a sign of weakness to ask for help, especially when dealing with mental health. I'm sure this would be pretty normal for many men of his time or maybe most from that generation; heck, I think many of us still struggle with this today. I challenged the gentleman, who had already been so courageous on the battlefront, to flip his perspective. I further explained how I would consider seeking therapy as a sign of bravery. Just maybe him asking for help will allow the next person to feel strong enough to ask or reach out, quite possibly when his or her life depends on it! Thank you to the friend who encouraged this man to ask for help - another veteran strong and brave enough to get help. And thank you, sir, for your service as well as your generosity!
