September is National Recovery Month. Brings to mind some sad statistics I recently came across. Of the millions and millions of Americans that need treatment for substance abuse, less than twenty percent receive it. This is partly due to things like socioeconomic circumstances or proximity to care. But, a big reason is still the negative stigma related to addiction and recovery. Some would still view addiction as a moral failing rather than a complex health issue. Shame and fear of judgment hinder individuals from seeking help they desperately need. This is getting better but it has to stop. Nobody should die from stigma. Encourage open, compassionate conversations about addiction. Together we can foster an environment where everyone feels safe to seek the support they need. Help is out there. Hope is out there.
