"A speech language pathologist (SLP) works with individuals across the lifespan targeting evaluation and treatment of swallowing (dysphagia), cognition, language, speech and voicing impairments," said Andie Wood, MS, CCC-SLP. "An SLP working with the adult and geriatric population in the acute care setting will frequently be the patient's first exposure to the profession and I feel it is paramount that this first exposure be positive for the greater good of the profession. We assess and treat patient's suffering from swallowing and cognitive-linguistic impairments resultant from stroke, TBI, dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, etc. We complete imaging of the swallow such as Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) to help in making appropriate recommendations for the safest and least restrictive diet and to guide therapeutic practices.

"In my everyday role, I visit a variety of patients in the hospital and evaluate their current functional abilities and determine their needs," said Jeraka Michael, DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). "A lot of our patients come at their weakest and lowest moments- I do my best to motivate them in moving, to increase their strength and balance, and in the meantime coordinate with other disciplines what we can do to best serve these patients and get them home!"

In recognition of Environmental Services Week, we are proud to celebrate the incredible team members at Wesley Healthcare and across our larger HCA Healthcare network for maintaining a safe and clean environment for patients, colleagues and visitors. From infection prevention to patient safety, EVS team members show up to care for the spaces we share, and their work is foundational to the overall care experience.

Whether preparing a room for a new patient or ensuring high-touch areas are safely sanitized, the hard work and dedication of our EVS team members make a positive impact on the high-quality care we deliver. Thank you, EVS professionals, for creating a welcoming space for everyone who walks through our doors.

According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, about every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma – the most common types of blood cancer. Blood cancer is caused by DNA mutations within blood cells. In most cases, this is linked to factors beyond our control, like age, ethnicity and family history. This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re answering common questions by sharing the facts shown here.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including nine accredited blood cancer treatment programs. Through these programs, over 1,000 acute leukemia patients receive treatment each year. For some blood cancers, the only potential cure is a blood and marrow transplant. The HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network is the nation's leading provider of these transplants, conducting over 1,500 annually. Cellular therapy is another potential treatment for those with blood cancer, and our network is also leading the way in this novel treatment.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with blood cancer, we’re here to help. Find compassionate oncology care: https://bit.ly/46iV5BA

Su***de is a leading cause of death for young people age 15 to 24 in the U.S., according to the CDC. Knowing su***de warning signs like these from the American Psychological Association can make all the difference. They’re not always easy to spot – something as simple as a lack of response to praise or a change in physical appearance or hygiene could be cause for concern, so it’s important to recognize even the most subtle changes and know how to respond. Meet Amanda, a small business owner from Idaho, who exhausted her life savings while caring for her late partner, Robert, during his battle with cancer. Amanda, who relies on the premium health tax credit, now faces impossible choices again if Congress allows the tax credit to expire at the end of this year, sending her monthly costs skyrocketing.

“I lost my business, I lost my future, and honestly, some hope,” said Amanda. “Without the healthcare tax credit, my premiums would go up close to $4,000 a year. I don’t know what I would do. This is something that affects everyday, regular people. We need Congress to do its job.”

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including some of our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (Healthcare.gov). These tax credits are applied directly to people’s premiums, keeping coverage affordable and making healthcare more accessible. But unless Congress acts soon, these tax credits will expire at the end of 2025.

Letting the healthcare tax credit expire push families, like Amanda’s, over the edge and send healthcare costs through the roof. Congress must extend the healthcare tax credit and stop health costs from skyrocketing. Learn how you can help protect access to care at https://bit.ly/4m6s2a4.

At Wesley Children's Hospital, we believe healing is more than medical care — it’s about fostering human connection, compassion and courage. 💙

Through the Medals4Mettle program, athletes from across the country donate their hard-earned endurance medals to honor the bravery and resilience of patients fighting debilitating illnesses. Each medal represents more than an achievement — it symbolizes strength, encouragement and love passed from one heart to another.

Our Medals4Mettle Wichita team proudly helps make these moments possible, reminding us that healing is not only physical, but also emotional and mental. By opening our doors to programs like these, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence: delivering world-class care while embracing the human spirit that carries us all forward.

Thanks for bringing smiles and encouragement to our pediatric patients! To learn more about Wesley Children's Hospital, please visit us at https://bit.ly/4pfkvIW.

It’s not too early to get your flu shot! Doctors recommend that anyone 6 months or older get a flu shot in early fall each year. Getting a flu shot lowers your chances of getting the flu and reduces your symptoms if you get it. Watch our video to learn more.
