COVID-19 UPDATE:

I will continue to operate as usual at this time, offering in-person psychotherapy and assessment appointments. I do offer sessions via video as well if there is necessity to self-quarantine and as we are recommended to stay home as much as possible. Mental health remains important and it is not recommended to stop treatment during times of crisis. Please call my office to schedule telehealth sessions if you prefer this method to in-person.

Please stay home if you are ill. Always be diligent about hand-washing and avoiding crowded areas.

We are making efforts around the office to continually disinfect chairs, desks, counters and door k***s.

Today is National First Responders Day. It’s important everyday to honor the people who keep us safe and well in our communities. This is a population that is underserved by us and I have been working closing with Butler County to help them close the gap between mental health needs and services available!

It is also a population I feel comfortable and confident it working with so please always reach out if you have questions, concerns or need an appointment.

This is something that many people struggle to come to terms with. We are in relationships with ourselves and with others, and when we heal ourselves it helps our parents, children, spouses, co-workers, boyfriends, friends...everyone we come into contact with. The first step is hard, and hard stuff follows—but there is light and there is happiness and there is comfort.

🙏👌🙌🏼True courage!

This is actually something I get asked a lot. Therapy really is for everyone, but not every therapist is for everyone and it’s important to have a good fit. There is not one single person who could not benefit from an unbiased 3rd party in their life, because sometimes life is complicated and messy.

A Pediatrician Just Laid Out How to Protect Your Child From Sexual Abuse—And She's Begging You to Listen

I have spent many, many hours of my clinical career working with sexual offenders and victims, as well as so many parents who live in constant fear for their children. This isn’t a clinical article and is mostly anecdotal based on someone’s multiple experiences, but it does ring true. It’s so important to care for our children, but also to feel as though we can let them live their lives.

This pediatrician just laid out when, where, and by whom our kids are most likely to suffer sexual abuse, and gave us all the tools to prevent it.

Boundaries: Reasons You Say Yes When You Really Mean No

This is a great article that goes along with my post about boundaries this morning.

Somebody asks you to do something and you almost immediately agree, even though it's not something you want to do. You take on extra responsibilities at work

Boundaries are something that you owe yourself. People will treat you exactly how you allow them to.

Tuck yourself into bed, reflect back on the day, what went well and not so well, learn all the teachings your experiences had for you, then say to yourself, “thank you for the lessons I now leave everything in this day.”

Now sleep with a peaceful heart and an empty mind feeling light.

Set the intention to step into 2019 with a “light load” full of curiosity and freedom to live the life of your dreams. xoxo Michelle & Barb

Recently, my iPhone updated. And now it has an automatic screen timer. To notify me how much I’m on my phone. It’s pretty intense to see the numbers.

Now much time, on average, do you spend on your phone a day? Any specific times of day harder?

Signs And Symptoms Of Anxiety In Children

Y’all, anxiety is something I see every single day in my patients. Parents bring their kids in because they think they have bipolar disorder or ADHD and it ends up being anxiety. Working with children can be particularly difficult because so much symptomology looks the same-disruptive behavior at home and school, not following directions, not listening or completing schoolwork, yelling, crying for no reason, and being aggressive unprovoked. I work with parents on identifying problematic behaviors and implementing parenting strategies and coping skills to help the family manage the symptoms. If you are dealing with these behaviors at home or at school, it might be time to seek help from a professional.

Why Is Screentime Bad for Young Children?

This is something I talk with parents about frequently, especially if they’re starting to see some behavioral issues with their littles. I myself have been guilty of providing tablets and television rather than my time to my children, so I can be compassionate about the ease of this.

A Little About Me...

Therapy is a process and for that you need a good partner. I like to look at the positive side of psychology and help people see in them what is already there. People come to therapy for so many different reasons and it is my goal as a clinician to act as a guide for them to reach their goals.

I have spent many years in community mental health developing an array of interventions and therapy techniques to work with mood disorders, relational conflict, family issues, and traumatic experiences. I developed a specialty in psychological testing having spent much of my time completing evaluations for the juvenile court system.

I completed my undergraduate degree at Wichita State University in 2010 in psychology. I then attended Emporia State University to complete my Master of Science in Clinical Psychology in 2013.
