Brain TLC -Brain Trauma Learning Center

Brain TLC -Brain Trauma Learning Center Hi! I'm Kelly with BrainTLC. BrainTLC exists to fortify the caregivers of children with trauma.

We do this through trauma-competent training for educators, churches and parents, as well as support and direction for families in crisis.

In some ways this was one of those full-circle moments… I was truly honored to offer training to the Carpenter Place staff and volunteers yesterday. It was a joy to not only teach them new information, but also to learn my own new things from many of them and see the ways they are already caring so well for their teenagers! ❤️‍🩹

April has been a busy month for BrainTLC! I began the month as a breakout speaker at the GWC early childhood conference (where I also had an informational booth). A week ago I held a trauma-informed parenting class where I was able to bless foster parents with free CEUs. And this morning I delivered an inservice to the lovely teachers and staff at Loving Arms Child Care Center!

I had multiple people comment after today’s training that they not only felt better equipped to help the kids in their classrooms, but also learned about themselves. I continue to be grateful for each opportunity to teach this vital information! 😍

“Caregivers need care too.” This is SO true whether they are caregivers of an ailing adult or the parents of a child with trauma or neurodiversity. Mrs. Heming Willis said, “…it is so important that we show up for them so that they can continue to show up for their person.”

If you know someone who is the parent of a child with past or present trauma, it is HIGHLY likely that they are dealing with situations in the home that are much more intense than the “typical” childhood/teenage behavior struggles. Don’t assume they’re not just because they’ve always acted “fine.”

How can YOU show up for these parents so they can more fully show up for their children?

Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming Willis is speaking out about the death of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife and caretaker Betsy Arakawa.

East Point Church of Christ recently asked me to conduct a trauma-informed training for their children’s ministry volunteers. I was thrilled to accept the invitation and even more excited to hear about some of the things they were already doing to offer more wholistic care to all children who come through their doors, regardless of their struggles. Jesus is blessing deeply hurting children through this body of believers. This is what the church is called to do- be the love of Jesus to people and kids who are hurting by seeing THEM and not their behavior. ❤️

A big shout-out to Tree House Learning Centers for investing in the children in their care by ensuring their staff is trauma-informed. I enjoyed my time training the staff and educators this past Monday morning! One staff member wrote: "Thank you for teaching others about trauma. Your work is important." 🥰

Resilience. The ability to create positive outcomes, despite adversity. Kids today need to grow their resilience more than ever! (And let's face it, so do many adults.) Science proves that the strongest factor for helping children overcome the effects of trauma or difficult experiences is at least ONE consistent, connected adult in their lives. These adults help children learn that IT MAKES SENSE that this is so hard, and yes it STINKS that we cannot change it! It's ok to feel that!! And then, let's figure out how we can grow from it.

In the face of intense trials, what are the healthy protective factors you are using to build YOUR resilience? How are you supporting your children and teaching them they can do hard things?
