As a doula in Wichita, Kansas, Bethany Fenlason and her team provides continuous physical & emotional support during labor for the mom and birth partner, non-medical pain management(different labor positions, massage, relaxation techniques, etc). Postpartum services are designed to "mother the mother" and provide her with whatever help she needs to rest and take care of herself and the baby. This

can include newborn care, breastfeeding support, as well as light housekeeping and cooking or help with siblings. I want to empower women with information & knowledge to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth. On my own journey, I discovered that birth is a natural process that we can trust given the tools and resources to make informed decisions. Doula support has been proven to shorten labor time, reduce interventions and c-section rates and enhance bonding experiences. More info can be found on my website at www.wichitafamilybirth.com

Welcome Benelly!! This mom endured the longest labor I’ve ever seen. She showed such strength and endurance. And she got her prize in the end! It’s always worth it!

Last but certainly not least in the list of introductions is Benelly. She was baby 5/5 in an 8 day stretch.

Through this pregnancy, labor, and birth there were lots of twists and turns, and I'm incredibly proud of these parents navigating each wrench thrown their way with grace. This little girl ended up being born in the hospital for a variety of reasons and mom held out an impressive 50+ hours before getting an epidural and even then it was only at the recommendation of the OBGYN to see if it would let her body finish dilating. Despite being in the hospital, dad was still able to help catch his sweet daughter!

This sweet girl is doing well at home with mom and dad, whose family absolutely adores her! Congratulations mom and dad on bringing sweet Benelly earthside!

Welcome baby Nora!!!
Born at 6lb 10oz on 2/26/25 at1:25am

***** Birth Story Time *****

What details would you like to share about your birth?
I knew I had been dilated 3-4cm for a week or so, so when I got my membranes stripped I somewhat expected labor to follow shortly after. The day Nora was born I went to the OB, chiropractor, then the zoo, went on a 3 mile walk, took a nap when my toddler napped, ate spicy pizza for dinner, and watched a comedy special. I wasn’t trying to induce labor, but we were trying to get the happy hormones flowing! Starting about 4-5pm I had short, inconsistent contractions. By 7pm I felt they could possibly be labor contractions. By 9pm I was sure I was in labor, I was just unsure how long it would last. Bethany helped me make the decision on when to get to the hospital and we ended up leaving around 12:15am and Nora was born 1:25am!

What surprised you the most?
A couple things. I was surprised at how much I remembered from my first birth and how I was able to handle it this time around. I felt more in control and that I knew what my body was doing! My water hadn’t broken when my body started to push and I was able to ask them to break my water bc I knew my body was hitting a wall. I was also surprised on how helpful a doula was even though I had already given birth unmediated once before. Although both my husband and I knew what to expect, emotions run high in the moment and we were grateful to have a doula there. Overall, the short labor surprised me the most!

What was your favorite comfort measure?
Counter pressure on the hips and tens machine helped make my labor more bearable! Also being able to get right into my preferred positioning helped too.

How did your doula help you and would you use one again?
Bethany was a calm presence when things were intense and escalating quickly. She quickly jumped into action with no hesitation and started offering comfort measures and telling my husband how to apply counter pressure to help too. Things were moving so fast but she stayed calm and relayed my wishes to the nurses.

What advice would you give other moms?
Trust your body and listen to the sensations. That birth high after an unmedicated birth is so worth it!

It’s a girl!!!
Longest birth of my career but she’s here safe and sound!
Thankful for a great doula team! ❤️

💓 Welcome baby Madeline!!! 💓
Born April 17 at 7 lb 7 oz and 20” long.

**** Birth Story Time! ****

It’s so special when you’re invited into the birth space of a friend - truly an honor!

What would you like to share about your birth?

It seemed in some aspects things were moving slowly, but in other aspects it went rather quickly! I started dilating a couple weeks before due date, and had prodromal labor the week prior to her coming. I labored and eventually had my membranes stripped, water broken, and Pitocin started, but the one thing I didn’t have (and was my goal to avoid this delivery) was no epidural. It took many rounds of labor exercises and finding out what got the contractions moving quicker to help the process along. I even got to enjoy a warm jetted tub bath before she arrived! We knew things were happening just as they should be at their own pace. From the time of contractions starting at home till birth it was about 24 hours of laboring.

What surprised you the most?

Getting to see how my body responded to different laboring positions and exercises. Some exercises did nothing at all, and two specific ones REALLY kicked my contractions into gear. It really is a dance of listening to your body and trying to lean into that.

(Lift and tucks and dilation station for the win!)

What was your favorite comfort measures?

When contractions were “happening” the TENS unit was my favorite, and I never took the special comb away either when the pain started increasing. I would hold the comb and distract from the pain. Both things were suggested by my doula and had never used before, and was really beneficial and comforting!

How did your doula help you?

I can’t say enough how grateful I was for Bethany. From the beginning she was prepping Chris and I so we could have things like a birth plan in place and think ahead. Although this was baby #3 for us it was my first one with any birth support and with no epidural. She was prompt with suggesting comfort measures when things were changing and offering suggestions when my body was doing its weird labor thing (contractions turning off and on). She supported me in all the ways, physically, emotionally and spiritually. She was even a helpful support with my husband there, when things were “getting serious” during the labor and time of delivery. She was never pushy on any measures but honored what we thought was best. I 100% would use a doula again and recommend her 100% 🩷

What advice would you give other moms?

This birth was our last one (our last planned one anyway), so I would encourage to think about if you had prior births and wanted to try something different, to not be afraid to do that. Bethany had the knowledge to coach me through the labor and help us navigate what we were hoping our last birth would look like (although knowing to hold it loosely because it is our bodies birthing the baby on its own timeline).
