âWhere do you get your protein?â
This might be the most common question Iâm asked and although I think itâs the wrong questionâwe should be asking âwhere do you get your fiber?â since 95% of Americans are fiber deficient and 0% are protein deficient unless malnourishedâitâs a common question so here is one of many answers.
TOFU.
So many people seem turned off to tofu because they picture a slimy gelatinous block of nothing. But similar to chicken, tofu takes on the flavors of what you put on it. Here are a couple of tips:
1. Get organic extra firm (or sometimes âhigh proteinâ) tofu. This has the best texture and gets crispy on the outside when baked.
2. Press out some of the liquid and marinate in flavors you love. Pictured here: curry powder, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, low sodium soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. Bake in the oven at 350 until crispy edges.
3. Final note on tofu: it doesnât contain estrogen (meat and dairy have plenty though!) Marketing has led you to believe that. It has phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) that block estrogen receptors in your body from allowing actual estrogen to connect to your cells. So, tofu is actually protective. Studies show that women who eat soy have less breast cancer and less recurrence of breast cancer (check out Asian countries who eat a lot of soy). And soy is even protective for menâyou will not suddenly have female traits if you eat tofu. In fact lots of bodybuilders eat tofu as a lean source of protein and build massive muscles doing so.
Try tofu. Prepared the right way, I bet youâll like it. Better for you, better for the planet and animals. Thatâs a win for everyone đđź
