I'd like to thank Mr. Wilmouth... 44 years late.

I was about 12 years old. My parents had signed me up for softball (a sport it turned out that I had zero aptitude for). We had a game, and I decided to warm up. I swung the bat, and it felt funny. It made a sound as I wound up. Quickly, I discovered that the reason for the sound and "off" feel was that I'd hit my coach, Mr. Wilmouth.

The reason for this story is this man's remarkable and immediate response to my inattention. To this day I can remember his kind, gentle voice asking me to be more careful. There was ZERO trace of anger or frustration in his words or tone. There was only kindness, and guidance.

How many of us could be so kind, so gentle, in a moment like that? I know that even now I would (at minimum) struggle to be so kind, so generous, so HELPFUL, when wronged or harmed like that. This man took a physical insult, and IMMEDIATELY turned it into a teachable moment that affects me to this day. Instead of (justifiably) roaring in pain and righteous anger, hurling insults and pain and rage that easily could have affected me and stayed with me for decades, this great man chose to speak kindness to a boy. A boy who would one day become a man, and aspire to be the sort of man his coach proved himself to be.

Thank you, Mr. Wilmouth. Thank you for being the coach, human being, leader, and role model that boy, and all of us, need.
