Even PTs get hurt some times. Dr. Alec tweaked his back on Saturday during a workout. Sunday morning he went to the gym to get some movement in. His rehab looked like:

40’ EMOM (every minute on the minute)
Min 1: 10 cal assault bike
Min 2: 10 cal ski erg
Min 3: 12 cal c2 bike
Min 4: 12 cal row

After that pain was significantly less with improved mobility, so it was time to work the area more specifically.

12’ EMOM:
Min 1: 10e KB Bent Row
Min 2: Med Ball Front Squat Hold x30 seconds
Min 3: Side Plank R x30”
Min 4: Side Plank L x30”

The Single-Leg RDL is a great exercise for working multiple joints/muscles together. Although not the best way to improve top-end strength and power of the hamstring/glute muscles, it’s a great exercise to work a hip and shoulder opposite of one another, which translates well to athletic activities such as throwing a ball, hitting a golf ball, or shooting a hockey puck.

Another benefit to an exercise like this is that by forcing multiple muscles/joints to work together, you can learn about your body and where your weak spots might be. A super wobbly ankle, and dropping pelvis, or an inability to maintain a neutral spine can give you clues as to where your weak link in the chain may be.

No reverse hyper set up? No problem! You can get a similar stimulus with a bench and a pad. These “Poor Man Reverse Hypers” are a staple of many of our lower back rehab programs. If you’ve never performed this exercise before we recommend
1. If you have current low back pain or a history of lower back pain, get evaluated first to make sure this would be a good exercise for you.
2. Start with 2-3 sets of 10-12 reps, just bodyweight, before increasing anything.

One of the ways we like to test and track progress is through the use of digital dynamometry. It’s quick and easy to use, and it gives us a clearer picture of a client’s ability to produce force in a specific movement. With hands alone, we can get a sense if something is really strong or really weak, but often there can be discrepancies from side to side that we would miss with hands only testing.

In rehab assessing > guessing. We want to have clear ways to determine if progress towards the goal has been made, or if we need to change the plan.
