Your lat pulldown technique could be hurting your shoulder!

When we caught up with Amy, one of your favorite Niantic OT’s, she shared some of the common mistakes her patients make when it comes to the traditional lat pull-down.

Your lats work with your rhomboids, low traps, and serratus anterior to help keep your shoulder blade in its proper position.

The other sneaky muscles helping maintain proper positioning?

Your diaphragm and core! Retract (pull back) and depress (pull down), your shoulder blades, and sync each rep with your breathing when hitting your lat pull-downs.

This synchronization prevents the painful pinching that can happen in your neck and helps you build the proper patterning you need for healthy shoulder strength.

Even if you don’t have a cable machine, if you do this movement effectively, you should be able to feel your muscles engage while mimicking the movement with only body weight.

Sitting at a desk all day? Take a moment to adjust your posture, your back will thank you.

Occupational therapist Leigh demonstrates how opening up your chest by squeezing your shoulder blades together can help fix poor posture. You can even do small exercises during the day, like these scapula retractions while you type. If you find yourself slouching during the day, it may be a sign that you need to strengthen those posterior muscles.

Stay tuned for more mobility exercise tips from the OTs and PTs at Orthopartners.

Occupational Therapist Amy, shows us improper and proper form for this chest opener exercise.

Can you see the difference in the proper form in Amy’s Door Pec Stretch?

Chest openers (pec stretch) are often prescribed to patients working through neck and shoulder pain.

One of the most common mistakes we see with patients trying to follow along to a PDF version of this stretch is the positioning of their spine in relation to the door.

Check out these Big 3 Mistakes to watch for to make your chest opener more effective and help your shoulders sit a little easier today:

❌ Don’t lean forward to try to feel the stretch more. Notice the arch in the low back - ouch!
✅ Do Position your hips so they sit in line with your upper back to avoid unnecessary spinal tension

❌ Don’t do these too quickly.
✅ Do Hold the stretch for about 15 seconds per rep (or as instructed).

❌ Try only one of these variations.
✅ Do Our pec muscles insert at multiple angles, so if you’re only doing one version of this stretch, you could be missing out on significant relief. Starting with the lower he overhead position is going to put the most stress on the shoulder joint

Save this to do as soon as you stop scrolling - your posture, will thank you!

Follow along for our 6 part shoulder health series.

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that involves using a small camera and specialized instruments. This technique allows surgeons to access the joint through small incisions, reducing trauma to surrounding tissues and promoting quicker recovery. 💪 However, for joint replacements, an open surgery method is often necessary. Open surgery provides the surgeon with a direct and unobstructed view of the joint, ensuring accurate implant placement and overall success of the joint replacement. The size of joint replacement implants, such as those used in hips or knees, often requires a larger incision for proper insertion, and open surgery provides the necessary space for secure implant placement.

Dr. Chokshi is an expert at joint replacement, and he's always happy to answer questions about different treatment options.

Professional athletes that are in top shape are still prone to injury. Although they may be less likely to be injured from daily activity, they often push their bodies to their physical limit during a game.

The competitive atmosphere of professional sports can lead athletes to push themselves to their limits, increasing the risk of injury. Their desire to win, perform at a high level, and meet fans' expectations can cause athletes to take more risks.

The amount of time a professional athlete spends training and competing in their sport also increases their exposure to potential injury.

Team Physicians (like former NY Mets Physician Dr. Chokshi) are likely to see a lot of sports-specific injuries. For example: in baseball, shoulder and elbow injuries are common due to the repetitive nature of pitching. These sports-specific injuries are less likely to occur in athletes during daily activities.
