Tis the Season…did you get your flu shot yet?
December 1st through December 7th is National Influenza Vaccination Week, a national awareness event that focuses on the importance of getting a flu vaccine each year.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. People of every age, including people in good health, are at risk of flu. Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands or tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States. Getting vaccinated yourself also protects people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.
Stay healthy this holiday season and call your Primary Care provider or Horizons Health for your flu shot today!

Here are a few tips to keep your portions in check: Try using a smaller plate; it can trick your brain into thinking you are eating more food. It takes 20 minutes for your body to tell you you’re full; so try waiting 20 minutes before having seconds. Leftovers taste great the next day too! Rethink Your Drink | Healthy Weight | CDC

Rethink your drink…

When it comes to weight loss, it’s not just about cutting calories from the foods we eat. Think about what you’re drinking! A great way to cut calories is to rethink your drink and make a change. Here are some ideas:

1. Choose water, diet or low-calorie beverages. 2. Carry a water bottle and refill it throughout the day.
3. Serve water with meals. 4. Add slices of lemon, cucumber, or watermelon to water. 5. Opt for smaller size coffee or latte. 6. Choose skim or low-fat instead of whole-milk or cream in your coffee drinks.

Make Time for Breakfast

Tempted to skip breakfast? Studies show that eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention. For kids, eating in the morning is essential for optimal school performance and overall health. Kids (and adults) who eat breakfast tend to do better at school (and work) and have healthier weights and cholesterol levels as well. Foods that top the list for brain-fuel include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, protein and fruits.

To rev-up your family for a busy day, plan ahead. For most people, time is the biggest obstacle to eating in the morning. Here are three tips for beating the breakfast rush hour:
• Get ready the night before: Set the table with bowls and spoons for cereal. Get out the blender for smoothies. Slice up some fruit and cheese.
• Keep it simple: Fancy breakfasts are wonderful when you have the time. On busy days, a sandwich, a slice of leftover veggie pizza, or low-fat yogurt with fruit work just fine.
• Pack to-go: If there's no time to eat at home, take your nutrition to-go. Pack a brown bag breakfast for the road – or see if your school offers a breakfast program.
