Some days you're just not ready for the camera. Some days you're not ready for your mental close-up. For example, spending the day in a negative loop, ruminating upon all the things you cannot influence, control, or fix. Yes, I am talking about the phenomenon of Monday whether it is Monday or your inner thought-life. Monday my thoughts centered around feeling behind and overwhelmed without resolve.

...more on TUESDAY

Today I was given the best compliment that allowed me to recover. While in session a new client chose to share an affirming phrase, "I like the way your brain works" rekindling my sense of being authentic. I believe another way of saying this could be, the role of being a therapist and being real can be tricky. Some days I need to be comforted that my personal neurodiversity allows me to professionally help others to see things differently.

Thanks Jimmy for capturing this expression and being my support.
Happy Easter!
Mia and I had a little reunion today. To those who enjoyed her company while in sessions you’ll remember her kindness, energy, and cute looks. Seeing her jump up to sit on a lap, or fall asleep always made therapy feel down-to/earth.
Grateful to have a longtime friend in Ms. Jess. See our short story below for inspiration. 😊🙏🏻

What is a music therapist? Here is a great explanation.🎵☺️
I find myself talking to myself daily; does that make me crazy? Ha! Quite the opposite; I discuss the importance of having a nurturing inner voice, rather than an ongoing critique of harsh words. Building your inner strength is a process.

Never have I...bit someone, but my friends in high school working on the yearbook took some liberty. I dunno, but I think I might spring for the t-shirt and go with it. 🥰

11/17/2022

Typically I pass over photos from high school, it is easy to view that timeframe of my life as "other" and with a protective, distant lens. However, I find myself even more in tune with the tenderness of this age lately. This photo is what I am writing about, mainly how in a sense we access time travel with the lens of my heart and mind. Zip zap zoom, I can go straight to the evening; it is 1997 Socastee High School talent show.
But let me mention the prep again. I can estimate at least two weeks of preparation including convincing my friend to pick up the guitar, learn to play, sing and finally enter us in the talent show. That is ambitious, perhaps even brazen. So that is what we did, Kate and I would begin playing from purchased composition sheet music (before internet access), learning tablature, harmonies, and two part guitar. On the night of the talent show we played and it seemed super low key. I am not sure what happened because it is a very suppressed memory, after announcing our names as the winners of the talent show we accept a trophy, but otherwise I cannot tell you anything else. I cannot tell you who I talked to, what was said, and worst of all who took this picture! It is the only one I have and my eyes are closed. I am so happy to have it that I don’t care. But even this photo is not my core memory. There was too much chaos in my nervous system to have stations that are clear. I mean that ability to walk step by step through the night is null. It is darkened out of my personal access. My emotional landscape was- is riddled with anxiety and mixed anger.

What actually happened?

My core experience of others pouring out their disgust and humiliation of public, mass shame that their people did not win. It did not matter that it was Kate and I. It only mattered that they protest their judgment because they disagreed with the three paneled to judge.

It was a mass public collective booing both directly and indirectly at me.
Not only
BOOing
but the tone of disgust, disappointment, disapproval, hate, jealousy, contempt, disorder.

Have you ever been in a position of reward and shame at the same time?

Plan on dying to old negative messages and begin working with mindful affirmations.

P.S. Thanks clock mode for the momentary joke! 🤣

We are just hangin out. Guitar 🎸
In my family I can list all the family members who play or have a guitar hangin out somewhere. My dad learned two songs when he was in college and learned to play them rather well. My brother Chris plays the bass. My nephew, Grainger Hite plays electric guitar. Jimmy plays all kinds, classical, acoustic, bass, and electric. I love my acoustic, and our wee little one loves them all!!!
If you’re wanting to learn to play the guitar ask me about adaptive lessons.

Have Friend Will Travel
We two music therapists have crossed time together for 20 years. Recently I am reminded of the kindness of fellowship between kindred-minded souls. Mindfully when I peer into this photo I can see the ease of authenticity; openness and love.
My friend formed a bond with my daughter in moments. As consequence I have been having to role-pretend play I am Ms. Jess in order to help my little one process the impression and furthermore use this as leverage. For example, let me paraphrase.
My kid: Mom could you be Momma Jess? She left in her big car. I like her big hair. She makes animal noises.
Me; now as Momma Jess (more whimsical and elevated)😉, “Hey, will you try to listen to Mom and Dad and go to sleep now? Let me see if your yawn is big?”
I gained so much from our mini visit and am so lucky 🍀 we are longtime friends! #rxmindyourmusic 03/20/2021

Toddler Tunes:
Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Arrive with your toddler ready to join. What to expect; this month has many elements, but the main theme for March is 🎶Marching out our Madness🎶
This notion really strikes a chord. Being angry is human. Holding angry feelings too long makes us SAD-ANGRY-GUILTY.
For some, our temperament can express anger more easily. Some of us are more comfortable being sad than angry. Still, most of us choose to hide our feelings to avoid others knowing or experiencing that we have these intense, difficult feelings. We even deny when things have bothered us. We are still tolerant when others take advantage of us.
This March I am embracing the Marching out of my Madness. Please join me!!!

This dynamic toddler duo find the xylophone magical! 🎶

SAD SONGS, congratulations to my dear friend, EMSBY who is perpetually saying something profound from the heart. Nate Alex captured the songwriting process beautifully.

This morning I had the pleasure of hanging out with local singer/songwriter, Emily Burdette, as she continued to work on some soon-to-be-released singles. We chatted about the similarities of music and photography and why she thinks "sad songs" have a more profound effect on the listener. Go look her up on Spotify and keep an eye out for her at venues around town. She may or may not be accompanied by Ollie, her faithful dog who, in the low light of morning, looks somewhat similar to Master Splinter.

SEEKING SPONSORSHIP for November's American Music Therapy Association Conference.

When I see AMTA fees and the great resources they provide I spring every few years. Then I confront myself, "Why can't I afford the time and money to attend for continuing education and to learn from other music therapists?" Then I contemplate how I would take un-paid time-off as a professional and imagine taking time away from on-the-job training as a new parent.

Recently, I made plans to move my practice striving to keep in tune, keep in time, and keep earning. It would be awesome to obtain financial support to attend the conference. If you've been blessed with balance and have the means to donate, I hope you'll consider an offering.
