We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Anne De Bernardo, said, “I chose New Hanover Regional Medical Center because it checks all the boxes on my residency want list. The people at New Hanover are dedicated towards my success and emphasize well-being during residency. In addition, they offer a variety of rotations that meet all my pharmacy interests. Holly Snider, our residency program director, offers flexibility with our schedules and tailors our rotations to align with our career goals. For me, I was able to get numerous rotations in Ambulatory Care early on in my residency because I was interested in a PGY2 in Ambulatory Care. I chose New Hanover because of the people: knowledgeable, caring, and passionate. And having the beach nearby is a bonus!”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY2 Critical Care Resident, Ray Smith, said, “I originally chose to come to NHRMC based on my experience as a student; I felt I had learned the most and interacted with the rest of the healthcare team more than any other hospital I had went to. I chose to stay at NHRMC for a second year because of the hands on critical care experiences that I have had, and the opportunity to keep learning from great people. Also, being on the coast gives me plenty of things to do outside of work!”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Resident, Jessica Stickel, said, “I knew that New Hanover was the place for me when I met so many amazing people during my PGY1 interview day. It was clear that everyone I interacted with cared about the residents and patients on an individual level. Throughout my time here I’ve experienced that atmosphere and have been challenged to grow each day. I knew I wanted to stay for my PGY2 in ambulatory care and continue to learn in this supportive environment. I’m excited to see what the rest of the year will bring! (And the view from my balcony is just a bonus) 😊”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Gabrielle Duncan, said, “One of the largest reasons I chose NHRMC was that I could tell from the start that the residency program directors and preceptors not only care about you as a professional, but you as a person. The culture of the program shined through on interview day and I knew that I would feel supported and valued throughout my residency year. Another reason I was drawn to NHRMC was because of the vast ambulatory care experiences and potential for a PGY2 in ambulatory care. In North Carolina and at NHRMC, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners (CPP) have extensive independence, and this was very desirable for me since it is a future goal of mine.”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Lindsey Benavente, said, “Residency was something I always knew I wanted to do after pharmacy school. When looking into programs, I wanted one that would help me not only grow in my clinical skills, but also grow in my leadership. I first heard about NH NHRMC during one of my IPPE rotations P2 year and was instantly drawn to their program. At Midyear, I had the opportunity to speak with residents of the program and learn more about the many opportunities here at NH NHRMC. What solidified my interest was learning more about their emphasis on leadership development through LEAD and the opportunity to participate in a teaching certificate program. The RPDs and preceptors in this program are truly dedicated to our learning and growth as not only pharmacists but individuals. Being in Wilmington is a major plus – there are so many amazing restaurants and places to explore. I cannot wait to see what the rest of this year has in store!”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Nick Shields, said, “After coming across the NHRMC booth at midyear and talking with the residents I quickly realized the residency program here was special. The residents were so inviting and the RPD had set up a great workflow for the virtual environment, which showed great adaptability that was missing from other booths I entered. Upon further research, I saw that the rotations and staff here would shape me into a great generalist and give me opportunities to pursue all of my areas of interest. This was solidified after interview day where I also saw how much the program cared about the wellbeing of their residents and how the longitudinal experiences offered here would be of significant value for my professional growth. Wilmington is also a wonderful place to live, which only helped me finalize my decision even more. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come to NHRMC.”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Kymberly Buzzeo, said, “When looking into residency programs, a strong supportive culture was what I valued the most. I was blessed to have the opportunity to complete my APPE rotations at NHRMC and experience this supportive culture firsthand. I knew shortly after starting my rotations that NHRMC was where I was meant to be for the next step in my career. I can truly say that my preceptors, RPD, and mentor all care about my personal wellbeing in addition to my growth as a pharmacist which is what makes this program so special. I love getting to work with inspiring people every day who challenge me but also encourage me. NHRMC also offers many unique experiences that appealed to me including a mentorship program, LEAD, and two internal medicine rotations. If you’re interested in multiple specialties like I am, NHRMC is a great place to be with the diversity of learning experiences offered. Of course, being close to the beach and THE best brunch spots is an added bonus! I’m so excited to spend the rest of my residency giving back to an institution that has already given me so much both professionally and personally and I am so proud to call myself a pharmacy resident at NHRMC!”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Resident, Samantha Seivert, said, “I worked for Walgreens throughout my time in pharmacy school and loved working in the community. I had never considered doing a residency until my APPE rotations when I learned what a Community-Based residency program within a health system really entailed. I loved that this type of program would allow me to combine my love for the outpatient setting with the clinical knowledge and skills I learned in school. When looking for programs, I was drawn to the state of North Carolina because they offer the opportunity for pharmacists to gain their CPP (Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner) license which opens the door for so many opportunities for pharmacists to serve in a clinical role. The residency program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center offered a blend of outpatient and ambulatory care experiences with plenty of opportunity to customize the rotation based on my interests as well.”

We asked, “Why NHRMC?” PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, Sarah Kennedy, said, "I chose to apply and interview with NHRMC, because having had completed my student rotations here, I knew I would be happy to continue training as a pharmacy resident at NHRMC. Pharmacists at NHRMC are allowed to practice at the top of their licenses in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and recommendations from pharmacy are encouraged and sought out by the providers here. Also, Wilmington is an awesome area to live in! I've enjoyed going to new restaurants every month, visiting all of the beaches with my dog, and look forward to attending concerts at the newly built Live Oak Bank Amphitheater."
